The 2016-17 English Premier League season is only just in the books, but it's never too early to start looking ahead to next season.
The team favored to win the EPL in 2018 is Manchester City. The Citizens are largely thought to have one of the best managers in the world on their side in Pep Guardiola, though that's about all we know about this team yet for next year. Guardiola promised not long after the January transfer window was complete that he was going to totally revamp this squad in the summer. Who will stay and who will go? That's going to be the million dollar question.
But what we do know is that Guardiola has a lot of contacts and a seemingly unlimited budget to work with. The powers that be at Manchester City have already proven they'll be happy to spend whatever it takes to get this team not only to the top of England, but to the point that it can win Champions League titles as well. Though City has yet to accomplish the latter, it does have championships in 2012 and 2014 under its belt. That said, the team hasn't hit 80 points in a season since that point, and that's the dead minimum of what it would take to have a shot to win the BPL. Either way, Manchester City is the +200 favorite to capture the championship.
Chelsea probably won't do nearly as much tweaking in the offseason after amassing 93 points, the most any team has had since the Blues picked up 95 in their championship season of 2005. Antonio Conte pulled something out of this team that Jose Mourinho couldn't over the course of the last couple seasons. His three-man back line probably needs another big body in the middle, and there's another playmaker to be had in the midfield for sure. But the rest of the bones are in place for another title run for sure, and that's why the Blues are set at +250.
Speaking of Mourinho, he's got an interesting season in front of him as well. Marcus Rashford and the rest of the Manchester United kiddies really took some big strides this season. If the Red Devils have one big problem, it's that they won't have Zlatan Ibrahimovic won't be ready for the start of the season. We're obviously not sure yet what the "Chosen One" has up his sleeve in terms of the transfer market at this point, but if he can make some splashes, perhaps even bringing in James Rodriguez from Spain, Man U could be a steal at +275.
The two most interesting teams of the "Big Six" might be Tottenham and Liverpool. The Spurs played out of their mind down the stretch and put a lot of pressure on Chelsea until the very end of the season. Liverpool had its ups and downs of late, but Jurgen Klopp brought the Reds to the Champions League next season. The next logical step in progression would be moving on to challenge for the team's first Premier League crown since way back in 1990.
