Coming into the season, the two established Premier League sides that were considered to be in the most trouble were Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United. Brighton finished last season just two points clear of the relegation zone, while Newcastle were the second-favorite to get relegated per soccer futures odds following a dismal summer. The oddsmakers’ predictions are ringing true through the first five games of this season with Brighton sitting in 16th place with five points and a -3 goal differential and Newcastle in 18th place with a -4 goal differential.

The Magpies notched an improbable win back on August 25 when they went on the road and defeated Tottenham Hotspur 1-0. It was a fortunate victory for the visitors, who only controlled the ball for 19 percent of the match, and it is the only win for Newcastle United thus far this season.
Newcastle’s only other result was a 1-1 home draw with last place Watford on August 31, and the Magpies have lost their three other matches. They weren’t competitive against either Arsenal or Liverpool, and only a stoppage time goal from Jonjo Shelvey kept them from an embarrassing final score at the hands of newly promoted Norwich City.
On Matchday 1, Brighton scored a huge victory, smashing Watford 3-0 at Vicarage Road. It seemed to be a promising start to the campaign for the Seagulls, but they have since fallen back. They could only take a point away from home matches against West Ham and Burnley, and they fell 2-0 to Southampton at home a few weeks ago.
The hosts won’t have two of their best offensive weapons for this match. Florian Lejeune is still recovering from a major knee injury he suffered in April, and Dwight Gayle has been sidelined for the last two months with a calf issue. Matt Ritchie will miss the soccer match too, but he could return next week against Leicester City. DeAndre Yedlin and Allan Saint-Maximin are both questionable for Newcastle, while Andy Carroll, DeAndre Yedlin, and Fabian Schar are all probable to play.
Brighton will be without Leandro Trossard for the next month due to a groin injury, and Jose Izquierdo is a long-term injury for the visitors. Ezequiel Schelotto is listed as doubtful to be available for selection, and both Leon Balogun and Bernardo are questionable. Wing back Martin Mantoya looks set to be available.
Brighton & Hove Albion Player to Watch
Neal Maupay has taken over as Brighton’s primary striker with 35-year-old Glenn Murray falling out of favor. Maupay has scored twice for the Seagulls this year, and the French international looks impressive after being signed away from Championship side Brentford this summer.
Newcastle United Player to Watch
The Magpies spent a club-record £40 million to acquire Joelinton from 1899 Hoffenheim over the summer, and that investment has yet to pay off. Although he notched the game winner against Spurs, Newcastle were certainly hoping for more, and pundits have already turned on Joelinton a month into the Premier League season. He must perform better than he has in recent weeks.
Neither side has many great options when it comes to scoring, so I’ll take the under and the draw in this match.
English Premier League Prediction: Brighton & Hove Albion 1, Newcastle United 1
