Premier League 2019-20 FREE Picks - Everton FC vs. Liverpool FC

Premier League 2019-20 season: There is a clear delineation in the race for the top four in the English Premier League. The two best teams in the English Premier League will square off on Thursday afternoon at the Etihad when Manchester City welcomes Liverpool to town. This match has lost a bit of its luster as Liverpool locked up their first Premier League title in club history last week, but the Citizens can do their part to prevent the Reds from making history. Liverpool can break City’s record 100-point season with a maximum of 107 points if they win their last seven matches.

Recent Form

To say this season has been a disappointment for Manchester City is an understatement. The Citizens have lost eight games after losing a total of six games over the last two seasons, and they will likely finish the season with less than 80 points. They were the odds-on favorites per the Premier League betting odds to win their third straight league title at the beginning of the campaign, but they fell behind Liverpool early and could not catch the Reds.

The Citizens hammered Arsenal and Burnley by a combined margin of 8-0 in their first two matches after the absence, but they were upset 2-1 by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last week to give Liverpool the title. Manchester City rebounded over the weekend by cruising to a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United to advance to the FA Cup Semifinals though, and they are favorites to add that trophy to their mantle.

Liverpool has only played two matches since English football returned to the pitch, but the Reds were able to lock down a league title for their long-suffering fans. They were frustrated on offense in a 0-0 draw to rival Everton, yet the flood gates burst last Wednesday in a 4-0 thrashing of Crystal Palace at Anfield. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, Fabinho, and Sadio Mane were all on the scorer’s sheet for the Reds in the win.

Notable Absences

Sergio Aguero is hoping to return in time for the Champions League, but he will miss the rest of the Premier League season because of a knee injury. Fernandinho will miss the match due to suspension after being sent off in the loss to Chelsea, while Eric Garcia is questionable because of a concussion.

Nathaniel Clyne has played his last match for Liverpool and will leave this summer after tearing his ACL before the start of the campaign. Joel Matip, James Milner, and Xherdan Shaqiri are all likely to miss this match too due to injuries picked up over the last week.

Liverpool Player to Watch

Jordan Henderson is the skipper of this club, but he sometimes flies under the radar with so much talent available to Jurgen Klopp. He has been seen as the talisman of this team though, and one of the glue guys since he does what it takes to get the job done. Henderson will have his hands full against City.

Manchester City Player to Watch

This backline has improved mightily since Aymeric Laporte returned to duty. It’s clear no one knew just how important Laporte was until he missed a couple of months due to injury, and that submarined City’s chances of earning a threepeat. Laporte will be the key in City’s backline once again on Thursday.

English Premier League Free Picks

Motivation is a bit of a question for both clubs ahead of this match. Liverpool may still be riding high after winning their first league title in 30 years, while City is essentially locked into second place in the league. In this case, we’ll go with the dog.

English Premier League Prediction: Liverpool 2, Manchester City 1

Chelsea FC vs Manchester City

Chelsea’s goal is to maintain its spot in the top four in order to qualify for the Champions League next season, so any kind of result against Manchester City would mean a lot considering the club must go on the road to face Leicester City on Sunday.

Recent Form

Manchester City has shown no signs of rust despite the long layoff. The Citizens went into the extended break on a sour note after losing a Premier League tilt with crosstown rival Manchester United, but they smashed Arsenal and Burnley in the last week to essentially clinch second place with a 20-3-7 record and 63 points. That puts them 20 points behind Liverpool and nine points ahead of Leicester City ahead of this match.

There isn’t a team in English football that has looked better than Manchester City since the league returned to action. City drubbed Arsenal 3-0 thanks to some nice work from Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne (and some horrorshow defending from David Luiz) on Wednesday, and the Citizens followed that up with a 5-0 beatdown of Burnley with braces from Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez.

Meanwhile, Chelsea was fortunate to pick up three points on the road against Aston Villa on Sunday. Villa took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but some poor defending in a three-minute stretch cost them a chance at a result. Christian Pulisic made magic happen and tied the score in the 60th minute, and Olivier Giroud notched the eventual game-winner off a deflection just two minutes later.

Notable Absences

Pep Guardiola will be without superstar Sergio Aguero for the rest of the season after Aguero suffered a torn ligament in his knee on Monday. Eric Garcia is out for at least one more match after a scary collision with Ederson resulted in a concussion, and Phil Foden, John Stones, and Claudio Bravo are all questionable.

Marco van Ginkel is a long-term injury concern for Chelsea, and the Blues won’t have Fikayo Tomori this week either. Callum Hudson-Odoi is listed as a game-time decision due to an ankle issue.

Manchester City Player to Watch

De Bruyne continues to prove that he is the most important player on the pitch for Manchester City. His passing and vision are simply sublime, and he was instrumental in the Citizens’ two victories. The Belgian midfielder leads the Premier League with 16 assists on the season.

Chelsea FC Player to Watch

N’Golo Kante is the best defensive midfielder in English football. Kante is back to his old self under Frank Lampard, and he has a tremendous impact on the game despite not making regular appearances on the stat sheet. He will be tasked with shutting down De Bruyne and City’s high-powered offense.

English Premier League Free Picks

The Citizens bested the Blues 2-1 at the Etihad earlier this year, but Chelsea was competitive throughout that game. They won the possession battle and opened the scoring thanks to a Kante goal in the 21st minute, and they won’t be as fatigued as City coming into this game. Chelsea stands a great chance of earning a result.

English Premier League Prediction: Manchester City 1, Chelsea FC 1

Everton FC vs Liverpool FC

This year’s Premier League race is already over. Liverpool’s only competition is history at this point, as the Reds are 25 points clear of the field. With a record of 25-1-0, Liverpool is out to finish the year with the best record in the history of the league, and they are looking to tie Arsenal and Preston North End as the only clubs to finish a Premier League campaign undefeated.

No club will catch them, but the race for the league’s next top spots will be heated as Manchester City has been banned from the Champions League for the next two seasons.

Provided that ban stays in place, there are three Champions League spots available for the rest of the Premier League to contest. Leicester City is a big favorite to land one of those bids, but the other two berths are wide open with five points separating six clubs. That should make for a thrilling finish over the last 12 games of the EPL season.

Which team will be the Premier League Champion for this season?

Odds to win the Premier League
Leicester -300
Chelsea +400
Manchester United +800
Wolverhampton +5000
Sheffield United +6500
Tottenham +5000
Arsenal +10000

The Merseyside Derby has been delayed for over three months, but emotions will be high when Everton hosts Liverpool at Goodison Park on Sunday. The Toffees are having a droll season, stuck in the middle of the table, yet they would love to stave off their archrival’s eventual Premier League title for as long as possible. The Reds are 22 points up on Manchester City, and they have the potential to claim their first league title in three decades if they beat Everton on Sunday and Manchester City loses to Burnley on Monday.

Recent Form

Liverpool might go down as the best team in the history of English soccer. The Reds are 27-1-1 through 29 games, and they are on pace to cruise past 100 points this campaign. Their first loss came just before the postponement when they fell to Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, and they were stunned at home by Atletico Madrid in their last match to get bounced from the Champions League.

There is no doubt that this is the best team in England by a mile though. Liverpool has been excellent in defense, allowing just 21 goals in domestic play, as Virgil van Dijk has been excellent in the middle of the line. The Reds were only able to knock off the Toffees 1-0 in their last meeting though.

Everton has certainly run the gauntlet in their last four matches. The Toffees had to travel to Arsenal and Chelsea and hosted Manchester United prior to the postponement of the Premier League. They fell 3-2 to the Gunners but they had a decent chance of earning a result in that game, and they were able to earn a result against the Red Devils thanks to a third-minute goal from Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Unfortunately, they were blasted 4-0 by Chelsea in their last match.

Notable Absences

Cenk Tosun is still recovering from an ACL injury, and he will miss the rest of the season. Jean-Philippe Gbamin and Yerry Mina came down with injuries during training and will be sidelined the remainder of the campaign, while Theo Walcott and Fabian Delph will miss this match for Everton. Andre Gomes has been cleared to play for the hosts though.

Nathaniel Clyne and Xherdan Shaqiri are both likely to miss the rest of the year for the Reds, and Adrian is doubtful to be the reserve goalkeeper due to a knock suffered in training. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is finally healthy again though, and both Andrew Robertson and Mo Salah have been given the green light after sustaining knocks in training.

Liverpool FC Player to Watch

Trent Alexander-Arnold is the most underrated player in Liverpool. While players like Salah, van Dijk, and Sadio Mane receive a lot of attention, Alexander-Arnold flies under the radar. He is second in the Premier League with 12 assists though, and he has been an excellent set-up man for the Reds throughout the campaign.

Everton FC Player to Watch

This match didn’t need any additional drama, but Richarlison provided it with his insistence that there are other defenders much better than Virgil van Dijk. Richarlison hasn’t had a great year, so his decision to call out the best fullback in the Premier League is curious, to say the least.

English Premier League Free Picks

We might see a little rust out of Liverpool, but the Reds are too talented to do anything but pick up all three points here.

English Premier League Prediction: Liverpool FC 2, Everton FC 0

Manchester City vs Arsenal FC

The Premier League is back in action after three months, and everyone is excited to see the top teams in England play out the rest of the season. The rest of the season will be fast-paced as the league looks to not affect next year’s schedule too much, so that will provide fans starving for games plenty of enjoyment. Aston Villa will host Sheffield United in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday, June 17, but the marquee matchup will see Arsenal head to the Etihad to face Manchester City.

Recent Form

It’s been a difficult season for Manchester City. The club is still facing a potential Champions League ban, and they will not be able to defend their league title as the Citizens are a whopping 25 points behind Liverpool. Their seven losses are more than the club has suffered in either of the last two seasons, and City was rather porous in the backline without Aymeric Laporte in the lineup. City has lost two of their last five league matches, falling on the road to Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United by a margin of 2-0. Their powerful offense only managed to score four goals during that stretch, and as with all clubs, chemistry will be a major issue going forward.

Mikel Arteta has replaced Unai Emery as the head man in Arsenal, and it is upon the former Gunners’ shoulders to turn around this once-proud team. Arsenal is currently languishing in the middle of the table with a 9-13-6 record this season, and they might fail to qualify for any European competition.

Arsenal has not dropped a game to a domestic opponent in 2020. The Gunners have tallied six wins and four draws in their last ten Premier League matches, and that has many at the Emirates sold on Arteta going forward. During that time, they notched a victory over Manchester United and drew with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and those are encouraging results given this team’s struggles with Big Six clubs.

Notable Absences

There are no major injures to report for Manchester City as the long break has given their players an opportunity to get healthy. However, Arsenal will still be without at least two of their players. Calum Chambers suffered an ACL tear in late December and won’t be ready to rejoin the squad until next season, and Lucas Torreira still needs time to recover from a fractured leg. Cedric Soares is considered questionable due to a broken nose.

Arsenal FC Player to Watch

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been the Gunners’ best offensive weapon since joining the team. He is currently second in the Premier League with 17 goals, and his deft touch and tremendous skill is the only reason Arsenal have been somewhat respectable this season. There is no other player that can create out of nothing like him on this roster, so he will be in the spotlight.

Manchester City Player to Watch

Kevin De Bruyne is the best distributor in England. The Dutch national is responsible for 16 assists already this season, and he has four more dimes than any other player in the Premier League. De Bruyne might crack 10 goals for the first time in his career too, and his play has been a nice story given his club’s struggles in 2020.

English Premier League Free Picks

Given the long layoff, both sides will likely be rusty. That might lead to a surprising result, especially since Manchester City are essentially stuck in second place and currently in purgatory with regards to their European hopes.

English Premier League Prediction: Arsenal FC 1, Manchester City 1
