BETCRIS Premier League Southampton vs Manchester City

It’s been a record-breaking season for Manchester City. The Citizens set the Premier League record for most consecutive wins earlier this year and tacked on some more achievements last week. They have now won 31 games, more than any other team in Premier League history, and Manchester City’s 97 points are the most any team has ever recorded as well.

Heading into the final week of the season, Manchester City can reach a symbolic number. With a win over Southampton, they will finish the season with 100 points and become the first English team in the century club. Only a handful of teams have been able to reach that total and that would cement their legacy as one of the greatest teams ever.

Recent Form

Coming into this game, Southampton is on cloud nine. The Saints have been in the relegation zone for much of the year, but it looks like they are safe now. They were able to pick up two draws and two wins in their last four games to overtake Swansea City for the final safe spot. Southampton sits three points ahead of Swansea at this point, and they have a nine-goal lead in terms of goal differential. As long as they don’t get crushed in this match, they should be fine.

Manchester City may have crashed out of the Champions League, but Pep Guardiola’s team was able to redouble its efforts in the Premier League after the disappointing result. They are 4-1-0 over their last five matches with all four wins coming by at least two goals.

Previous Meeting

When Southampton and Manchester City met in Manchester last year, the Saints nearly were able to grab a point. The Saints had the first real chance of the game, hitting the woodwork on a corner before Manchester City started to control the run of play. The Citizens dominated possession but were held scoreless for the first half.

Kevin De Bruyne finally broke the deadlock shortly after the half off of a set piece and it looked like the rout would be on as City poured on the pressure. However, Oriol Romeu was able to get Southampton level against the run of play and for a while it seemed like City’s long win streak would be snapped. Raheem Sterling was able to extend the streak when all seemed lost though, tallying in the sixth minute of extra time to give Manchester City the win.

Notable Absences

For this match, Manchester City is only going to be missing one player. Sergio Aguero suffered a knee injury a few weeks back and has been ruled out for the rest of the season. However, the club is hoping that David Silva will be back in the lineup. He took a leave of absence for personal reasons, yet he is expected to play here.

Southampton will not have the services of either Steven Davis or Jan Bednarek for this match. Both players have significant injuries and Davis may even miss the early part of next year. Mario Lemina is dealing with a thigh issue though and may be able to take the field.

English Premier League Free Picks

The Saints only goal in this match is to not get blown out. As long as that doesn’t happen they should be safe from relegation. Manchester City would be content with just a win and won’t force the issue either. That should lead to a pretty easy victory for the Citizens.

English Premier League Prediction: Manchester City 3, Southampton 1
