Premier League Tottenham vs. Newcastle United

Tottenham and Newcastle United open up their seasons on Saturday on NBCSN, with the Spurs a slight road favorite. Tottenham features one of the top strikers in the Premier league in Harry Kane, but there is a good chance Kane and a number of other top players for Tottenham will not play in this match.

Newcastle United plans to play a very defensive style of football this season, so this could be a low scoring match on Saturday. Let’s look at the game and Premier League predictions.

Tottenham vs. Newcastle United TV Coverage: NBCSN

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is likely to hold out a number of his top players on Saturday. Kane and a number of other players participated in the World Cup in Russia and Pochettino is concerned they are not rested enough. “It would be better for these players to miss the first one or two games than to play and end up getting injured and missing more games further down the line," said Pochettino to the media, “It’s a massive challenge for these players to get fit in time for the Newcastle game. Almost impossible. “If we feel it's too much of a risk to play these players then, no matter how much work they have been doing, we will not play them." Kane may not play and he may be joined on the bench by Dele Alli, Kieran Trippier, Eric Dier, Danny Rose, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Mousa Dembele. There is also no guarantee that goalkeeper Hugo Lloris plays. Be sure and check the lineup to see who Pochettino decides to start on Saturday.

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez is not happy his club didn’t bring in much in the way of off-season help. It could be that Newcastle focuses a lot on defense early in the season, especially if they don’t get any transfer help. Mo Diame said to the media that the team will be playing close to the vest early in the season. "We have a big start to the season and it will be similar to the Porto game. If we can try to keep the ball in the same manner we will be OK.” Diame said, "I think we played the game well and FC Porto were a good similarity to Tottenham so it was a good game for us to get ready for that first game. We defended quite a lot and we will probably do that against Tottenham too."

Key Stats

This series has been pretty even through the years, with Tottenham winning 68 times, Newcastle 58 times, with 32 draws. Tottenham did win both of the meetings last season by scores of 1-0 and 2-0. In their last 11 matches, Tottenham has six wins, while Newcastle has five. Surprisingly, the teams have not played to a draw since 2011. Perhaps that long drought of not playing to a draw will end on Saturday.

Newcastle is getting a lot of respect from the oddsmakers, as they are listed as basically a pick in this contest. I am tempted to take Newcastle, but I think there is a decent chance the game ends in a draw. The draw is definitely worth a strong look at odds of about +235. I also agree with what Diame said about it being a defensive struggle, so I will play the game under the total of 2.5.
