Two veteran teams aching to pull themselves out of the relegation zone will meet in NBC’s Match of the Week this Saturday. Watford are in last place with a 1-5-7 record and eight points on the season. The Hornets are five points away from safety, but they might need a little more since they have a pitiful -18 goal differential. Southampton are a little better with a 2-3-8 record and nine points, but they also have a -18 goal differential and are four points from safety. Both clubs need a win in the worst way when they meet at St. Mary’s Stadium.

The Hornets have scored the fewest goals in the Premier League (8) by a considerable margin. That is the main thing they will need to fix to avoid the drop, as the back line hasn’t been terrible and has been the reason Watford have some points this campaign.
Watford have secured results in four of their last six matches, and they held their opponents scoreless in three of those four games. This club played Sheffield United and Bournemouth to goalless draws, and nearly secured three points on the road against Tottenham before a Dele Alli goal in the 86th minute led to a 1-1 tie. The Hornets notched their first win against Norwich City in Carrow Road three weeks ago, and they are desperate for more of those results.
Southampton have surrendered more goals than any other team in the Premier League this campaign. That was largely the result of the worst home defeat in league history as Leicester City thrashed the Saints 9-0 in St. Mary’s Stadium last month, but Southampton have allowed multiple goals in five straight matches.
The Saints were able to secure a draw on the road against Arsenal last week though. Southampton nearly grabbed all three points with an inspired performance, but an Alexandre Lacazette goal six minutes into extra time resulted in a 2-2 draw.
No team has dealt with the injuries Watford have needed to overcome this campaign. The Hornets were without star forward Troy Deeney for much of the season, and they are still without the services of Danny Welbeck, Christian Kabasele, and Sebastian Prodl. Craig Dawson and Tom Cleverley are both considered doubtful, while Daryl Janmaat is questionable. Daniel Bachmann, Roberto Pereyra, and Domingos Quina are all likely to be available.
The hosts won’t have Stuart Armstrong for at least another week or two, and Sofiane Boufal is listed as unlikely to play this Saturday. Jannik Vestergaard is ready to see the field though, and that’s a nice boost for Southampton.
Watford Player to Watch
Gerard Deulofeu leads the Hornets in assists (2) and is tied for the team lead in goals (2), making him responsible for half of Watford’s scoring this Premier League season. The Hornets have had a tough time finding offense from anywhere else, but the combination of Deulofeu and Troy Deeney should give Watford a spark up front.
Southampton Player to Watch
Danny Ings has been fabulous for the Saints this campaign. Ings has almost half of Southampton’s goals, and the former Liverpool forward continues to shine since making the move south. His six goals make him one of the league’s top scorers, so he could find himself on the scorer’s sheet once more.
I love Watford in this situation. The Hornets are getting somewhat healthy, and they have more talent up front than the hosts.
English Premier League Prediction: Watford 2, Southampton 1
