The Southampton Saints have been in the Premier League since 2012, but they have only just avoided relegation the last two seasons. After four straight top eight finishes, Southampton finished 17th in 2017-18 and 16th in 2018-19, and they are languishing at the bottom of the table again this campaign. The Saints are currently level on points with 17th place Aston Villa, but they are in the relegation zone with a -17 goal differential. Points are crucial with demotion on the line, and they have a great chance to move themselves out of the drop zone with fellow stragglers West Ham United coming to St. Mary’s Stadium.

Recent Form

West Ham have just finished up an absolutely brutal stretch. The Hammers faced Tottenham, Chelsea, Wolves, and Arsenal in a little over two weeks, and they were only able to take points from one of those games. West Ham knocked off the best team of the bunch in their home stadium, beating Chelsea 1-0 in Stamford Bridge for the lone points in that run, and their last win before that came at home against Manchester United in late September.

The Hammers other victories came against bottom feeders Norwich City and Watford, so it’s fair to say West Ham has been inconsistent. This is their best chance at a win since taking on Burnley over a month ago though.

Southampton have looked much better in recent weeks. They were in 19th place for most of the campaign, but they have picked up results in three of their last four Soccer matches.

The Saints were unlucky to settle for a draw against Arsenal in the Emirates just before Thanksgiving. They overcame a late Watford lead to stun the Hornets 2-1 at home in late November and followed that up with a 2-1 victory over Norwich City in midweek action. However, they lost a 1-0 lead in the final third against Newcastle United last week, costing themselves crucial points.

Notable Absences

Star goaltender Lukasz Fabianski remains out for West Ham, depriving them of their most consistent player. Manuel Lanzini will miss the next three weeks too with a shoulder injury, while Jack Wilshere continues to miss time with a groin issue. Winston Reid is questionable for the visitors, but there is better news for both Andriy Yarmolenko and Aaron Creswell has both players will be available for selection.

Yan Velery will miss this week’s match due to illness, and Sofiane Boufal is questionable to play with a toe problem. Stuart Armstrong will return after missing last week’s game against Newcastle United though.

West Ham Player to Watch

Sebastian Haller is the leading goal scorer for West Ham this Premier League season, but fans were expecting more after he signed for a club record 45 million pounds in July. Haller was one of the stars for Eintracht Frankfurt last year, and he has not lived up to expectations since coming to London. He hasn’t netted a goal for the Hammers in over two months coming into this weekend.

Southampton Player to Watch

Danny Ings has been Southampton’s saving grace. Ings has nine goals this year, more than double the next closest player on the team. He is all alone up top often in this talent poor lineup, and his play has made the Saints competitive.

Ings will be the difference maker for the Saints. Look for him to find his way on the scorer’s sheet as Southampton takes some needed points.

English Premier League Prediction: Southampton 2, West Ham 1
