The most storied club in Italy locked up its eighth straight scudetto last weekend, and Juventus don’t have anything of real value to play for the rest of the season. The Old Lady are 20 points ahead of Napoli with five games left, and now that their Champions League dreams are dashed, there is a question of how seriously the will take the rest of the next month. That could be great news for an Inter Milan team looking to lock up their spot in next year’s Champions League.

Inter Milan are five points up on both AC Milan and Atalanta with five matches to go in the season. They are currently in third place in the Serie A standings, and with a match against Napoli in a few weeks, a result here would be huge for their chances of finishing in the top four. Inter are 3-2-1 in the last six matches, but that stretch included a lot of the best teams in Italy. Three of their remaining games are against Udinese, Chievo, and Empoli, and they will be heavy favorites in those games.
Juventus spent a fortune to put together a team that could win the Champions League, but like Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City, that didn’t help them find European glory. Instead, The Old Lady will have to console themselves with just one trophy this season after a stunning defeat at the hands of Atalanta in the Coppa Italia Quarterfinals. The big question remaining for Juventus is what Massimiliano Allegri does with this team the rest of the year. He could play his regular starters, kick off a youth movement, or field a combination of veterans and youngsters to give academy players some run. We saw Juventus essentially punt their match with SPAL two weeks ago, and more of the same could be in store.
When these sides met in early December, Mario Mandzukic scored the game’s lone goal in a 1-0 Juventus win. Inter managed to put just one shot on net in the defeat.
Sime Vrsaljko was lost for the year in January, and Inter have missed the right back that was supposed to shore up their back line. Andrea Palazzi is questionable with a calf injury, and Marcelo Brozovic is questionable because of a thigh injury.
Sami Khedira is out for the rest of the season, and Juventus might not have Paulo Dybala the rest of this campaign either. Martin Caceres has been declared out for this match, while Mandzukic, Matia Perin, Mehdi Benatia, and Giorgio Chiellini are all questionable.
Inter Milan Player to Watch
Mauro Icardi is set to part ways with Inter Milan this summer, and we haven’t seen much from the club’s leading scorer over the second half of the season. His messy contract negotiations led to management souring on him, and we have only just started to see him in the lineup again. He has provided a goal and two assists in his last three starts, but whether or not he starts is up in the air.
Juventus Player to Watch
His team doesn’t have anything to play for, but Cristiano Ronaldo wants to win the Golden Boot. Ronaldo is a proud player, and he knows that he was brought to Italy to score goals. He hasn’t been shy about continually firing away as his 159 shots dwarf the next closest person in Serie A, but he is three goals behind Sampdoria’s Fabio Quagliarella for the league lead.
Inter Milan vs. Juventus Free Picks
Without much to play for and with Juventus nursing a lot of injuries to top players, I see Inter Milan stealing a win here. Ronaldo will grab a goal, but it won’t be enough.
Inter Milan vs. Juventus Prediction: Inter Milan 2, Juventus 1
