If you squint at the records a little bit, you might think that Lazio and SPAL are the same team. After all, these are the only two sides in Serie A that have yet to draw, and their records are the inverse of each other. However, while Lazio’s 6-0-4 record has them in a comfortable spot in fifth place in the league, SPAL’s 4-0-6 record has them in 15th place coming into this match. No matter what happens here, the two side’s will continue to have inverted records after the game which is an interesting little tidbit to note.

Lazio have been a club that has taken care of business against the smaller teams in Italy, but they have yet to knock off a top club and that has them sitting in fifth place. Lazio lost to Napoli and Juventus in the first two weeks of the season, and they also lost to Inter Milan and city rivals AS Roma. However, they have defeated everyone else placed in front of them in Italian action. Three of their victories came by a margin of 1-0, so that’s a scoreline to watch here.
Meanwhile, SPAL have had some interesting results this season. They have been feast or famine in league play, defeating Bologna, Parma, Atalanta, and Roma and posting a clean sheet in each of those matches. SPAL have also been on the other side of a number of shootouts, losing to Torino, Fiorentina, Sassuolo, and Frosinone to nil. Last week’s loss stung quite a bit because it came to a team that had yet to win a game this season, and to make matters worse, it was at home.
There will be a handful of players out for both clubs ahead of this match that will be nationally televised in the US as part of their broadcast deal with Serie A.
Lazio won’t have midfielder Lucas Leiva available for this match, and that will hurt. He has been one of their highest rated players all year long, but he is out until the end of the month with a thigh injury. Position mate Milan Badelj is also a doubt to play with a thigh injury as well.
On the side of the visitors, SPAL won’t have midfielder Jasmin Kurtic and defender Johan Djourou available for this match. Both players have been sidelined for a bit and won’t return until the middle of the month. Midfielder Mattia Valoti is an injury doubt too.
Matchup to Watch
SPAL run a 3-5-2, but they defend like mad men in it. They are allowing just 1.3 goals per game, and their tilts have been very low scoring, even by Italy’s standards.
Ciro Immobile will be out to pick apart this back line. Immobile has had a great start to the year with six goals through 10 matches, and he has knocked in nearly half of Lazio’s goals.
Lazio manager Simone Inzaghi played Immobile alone at the top at the beginning of the year, but he has recently changed tact and drifted another player to the front to try to create more offense. He is expected to do that again here, putting the pressure on Thiago Cionek and SPAL’s back line.
Lazio vs. SPAL Free Picks
It seems fitting that these teams would draw, doesn’t it? SPAL have not been that much worse than Lazio on the year, and they shouldn’t be this large of underdogs. I’ll take them on the goal line and the draw for giggles too.
Lazio vs. SPAL Prediction: Lazio 1, SPAL 1
