Serie A Football Analysis

Some of the worst clubs in Serie A really helped the causes with stunning wins during mid-week action this week. Empoli pulled off the most surprising win after a shocking 2-1 victory over second-place Napoli that brought the Tuscan club out of the relegation zone. SPAL knocked off Lazio with an Andrea Petagna penalty in the 89th minute, and Frosinone picked up their first home win of the season after a converted penalty in the 13th minute of extra time.

Torino are favored here because this is a team that knows how to pick up road results. They have earned at least a point in 14 of their 15 road matches, with 11 of those being draws. Parma have lost three in a row ahead of this match, losing by multiple goals to Lazio and Atalanta before falling to Frosinone on Wednesday. They have scored in five straight matches though. Sampdoria have won four of their last six, and a win would make things awfully interesting. While the top two spots in Serie A have been long-decided, the competition for the last two Champions League spots and the Europa League spots is crowded. The hosts are just three points behind Lazio, Roma, and Torino. Meanwhile, the Claudio Ranieri era has not gone well for Roma. The results just haven’t been there since he replaced Eusebio Di Francesco a month ago.

Juventus are running away with the league, and they are likely to lock it up in the next few weeks. Cristiano Ronaldo won’t be available, which is great news for an AC Milan club in desperate need of a result. AC Milan have not finished in the top five in Serie A in five years, and they are just one point ahead of Atalanta.

  • April 7
  • SSC Napoli -1.5 vs. Genoa FC, O/U 2.5 and 3
  • Udinese Calcio PK and -0.5 vs. FC Empoli, O/U 2 and 2.5
  • Lazio Roma -1.5 vs. US Sassuolo, O/U 3
  • Inter Milan PK and -0.5 vs. Atalanta Bergamasca, O/U 2.5 and 3
  • ACF Fiorentina -1 vs. Frosinone Calcio, O/U 2.5
  • Cagliari Calcio PK and -0.5 vs. SPAL 2013, O/U 2 and 2.5

Napoli are the second-best team in Serie A, and they have an 11-3-1 record at home. They will be looking to wipe the taste of defeat out of their mouths against a Genoa club that is 2-3-9 on the road. Empoli are out of the relegation zone, but just barely. They are one point ahead of Bologna and can’t celebrate their victory over Napoli too much. Empoli have been solid at home with a 7-3-6 home record, but they are an awful 0-4-10 on the road. Udinese are hovering near the bottom despite three wins in their last six matches, and a win would give them some breathing room.

The most exciting match of the week will be between Inter Milan and Atalanta. Inter are a defensive-minded team, while Atalanta are the highest-scoring team in Serie A and netted four inside of 15 minutes against Bologna last week. Atalanta have four wins and one draw in their last five matches, and they are out to jump AC Milan.

  • April 8
  • Bologna FC -1 vs. AC Chievo Verona, O/U 2 and 2.5

Bologna moved down into the relegation zone after Empoli’s win, and the Bolognese are out to leapfrog their counterparts. They are hosting last-place Chievo Verona and anything other than three points would be a big disappointment.
