La Liga Game of the Week Preview – Barcelona vs SD Huesca

It’s a new season, but Barcelona have already won two trophies. They claimed the Spanish Supercup with a 2-1 win over Sevilla in Madrid three weeks ago, and they won their annual friendly known as the Joan Gamper Cup over Boca Juniors shortly afterwards. This week, they will take on newly promoted SD Huesca and are huge favorites on the La Liga betting line.

The Blaugrana are a 1/14 favorite on the three-way line which is rarified air when it comes to soccer betting odds.

Recent Form

If you’re a lifelong fan of SD Huesca, you have to be tickled pink right now. Huesca were founded in 1960, and they were promoted to La Liga for the first time in their history just last year after finishing in second place in the Segunda Division. They were one of the favorites to be relegated prior to the start of the year, but they are off to a great start in their effort to survive.

The schedule makers weren’t kind to Huesca with three straight road matches to start the season, but they are off to a dream start. Huesca got a brace from Alex Gallar to win their first match at Eibar by a score of 2-1, and they came back from a two-goal deficit to draw Athletic Bilbao 2-2 last week. In that match, Jorge Miramon scored in the 71st minute to halve the deficit and Ezequiel Avila knocked in the equalizer in the 87th minute to get the point for the road team.

Barcelona are off to a strong start themselves, but we all expected that from the Catalan juggernaut. They completely dominated the run of play against Alaves in their first match, outshooting their counterparts 25-3 and controlling the ball for 79 percent of the game. Lionel Messi scored brace in an eventual 3-0 win, while Philippe Coutinho notched the other goal.
Last week, Barca had to play on a disaster of a pitch on the road against Real Valladolid. The ground was coming up in huge patches throughout the night, and that stymied much of Barca’s plans on offense. Ousmane Dembele was eventually able to notch a winner in a 1-0 victory, but the play was something that did not resemble football.

Key Absences

There are no injuries to report on the side of Huesca ahead of this match. They will have their full contingent in their effort to pick up a result and send their fans into pure bliss with five points heading into the first international break.

Barcelona are not so fortunate. Sergi Samper will be out for this match, but he may return in two weeks’ time. It’s a similar story for Denis Suarez and Andre Gomes who are aiming to recover from strained hamstrings soon. Jasper Cillessen is listed as questionable to play, but he wouldn’t start in any case, while Carles Alena has just been deemed match fit.

Spanish La Liga Free Picks

This match will take much longer to decide than many believe. Barcelona are a three-goal favorite, and that’s somewhat unbelievable given the level of play in La Liga. The gameplan for Huesca will be to pack it in and hope for a draw, and they will have a fair amount of success. I think this match will be level most of the way, but Barcelona’s subs will prove to be the difference makers in a narrow victory at home over SD Huesca.

Spanish La Liga Prediction: Barcelona 2, SD Huesca 1
