Real Betis vs Alaves La Liga Game

Two teams looking for a spot in Europe next season will meet on Sunday when Real Betis hosts Alaves in La Liga action. Betis are currently playing in the Europa League and they are on pace to qualify for a spot in Europe once more. They are currently in seventh place with 32 points. Three points ahead of them sit Alaves. Alaves are looking to make their first European appearance in almost two decades, and they are currently tied for fifth. They are just two points back of Sevilla for fourth place though, and a Champions League appearance would be a dream.

Recent Form

At the end of 2018, Alaves were in a great spot in the league. Their fans were surely dreaming of a spot in the Champions League, but those dreams have been tempered somewhat with their play over the last six weeks. Alaves started strong with a win over Valencia and a draw against Girona, but then they lost three in a row and couldn’t score a goal against either Getafe, Rayo Vallecano, or Real Madrid. They managed a 2-0 win over Levante on Monday to get back on track, yet they know they need more wins.

Betis have been busy. The club made it to the semifinals of the Copa del Rey thanks to a relatively easy draw, and they are still alive in the Europa League too. That has stretched them a bit thin given their midweek schedule, leading to some up-and-down results in La Liga. They lost to mid-table teams like Leganes and Athletic Bilbao, but they have also been able to grab a big win over Atletico Madrid.

These teams met in late August. Although the game ended in a 0-0 draw, there were a ton of chances as both teams combined to fire 28 shots. If we see a similar type of game, some of those shots are bound to find the back of the net.

Key Absences

Martin Aguirregabiria is listed as questionable for this match due to a thigh injury. Ximo Navarro is questionable too because of an injury, so Alaves are hoping that Rodrigo Ely will be fit to return for this match.

After picking up a red card against Leganes last week, Javi Garcia has been suspended for this match. Betis won’t have the services of Cristian Herrera Tello either, as a major hamstring injury has sidelined him for another few weeks. Marc Bartra is questionable because of a pulled hamstring, yet Junior Firpo may be ready to return after being out for the past six weeks.

Matchup to Watch

We haven’t seen as many goals as we’re used to in La Liga. Teams have seemingly played more reserved than in the past, and that has led to plenty of draws and a clouded picture in the middle of the table. These two teams look ready to open it up though. They both know they can get three points out of this game, and their last meeting shows that both teams are willing to run up and down the pitch to try to get a win.

Spanish La Liga Free Picks

I like the over a lot in this game, and I’m going to put some coin on Alaves on the goal line too. Betis play on the road against Rennes in Europa League action on Thursday night, and the extra rest will benefit Alaves.

Spanish La Liga Prediction: Alaves 2, Real Betis 2
