Atletico Madrid would love to win their second La Liga title this century, but they know the road ahead is difficult. They are seven points behind first place Barcelona, and they have not had the offensive firepower they have had in past years. On Sunday, they will be out to secure a victory on the road against Real Sociedad and hopefully cut into the Blaugrana lead at the top of the table. Winning on the road in Basque Country is difficult though, and Real Sociedad have been on fire over the last two months.

The hosts are going to finish up the first two months of 2019 without a loss. Real Sociedad are on a 10-match results streak in all competitions, and they have four wins and four draws in La Liga play over that time. They started off with a big win over Real Madrid in the Bernabeu, and they have kept the train rolling along since pulling off the upset there. Real Sociedad are now just four points behind Getafe for fourth place in La Liga and just one point behind Real Betis for a spot in Europa League.
A loss to Real Madrid at home in the Madrid Derby could have led to a bit of a slide from Atletico, but instead they have circled the wagons. They have now allowed a goal in three straight matches, and Atletico have defeated Rayo Vallecano and Villarreal in league play and Juventus in Champions League action. Atletico are virtually assured of a spot in the top four, but a trophy is what they really want. In the first meeting between these two clubs, Atletico secured a 2-0 win. Diego Godin scored right before halftime and Filipe Luis gave the hosts some breathing room, while the defense put the clamps on Real Sociedad’s offense. Real Sociedad failed to put a shot on net in the loss.
Having Diego Costa and Jose Gimenez back is huge for Atletico, and the squad is close to fully healthy. The only two injury doubts coming into this match are Gelson Martins and Lucas Hernandez. Martins has been sidelined since mid-January with a thigh injury, while Hernandez has been out for a couple weeks due to a knee problem. They are both questionable.
Real Sociedad continue to be without Asier Illarramendi has he looks to recover from a groin injury. Adnan Januzaj, Miguel Angel Moya, and Andoni Gorosabel are all questionable to play, while David Concha, Martin Merquelanz, and Kevin Rodrigues are training with the club again. Concha and Merquelanz have been out for six months, while Rodrigues has been out for nearly three, so it would be big if any of the three returned.
Matchup to Watch
Willian Jose and Mikel Oyarzabal are out to lead Real Sociedad past Atletico in this game. The two have combined for 17 of the club’s 30 goals this season, but they know they will have a hard time scoring against Atletico’s incredible defense.

Atletico’s inability to score and Real Sociedad’s recent form has me liking the hosts on the goal line here. I think Real Sociedad will be able to net a goal, and that should be enough to at least get a point.
Spanish La Liga Prediction: Atletico Madrid 1, Real Sociedad 1
