La Liga Matchday 31 Odds Report

There were some fantastic games earlier this week in Spain’s top league. Villarreal and Barcelona exchanged multiple goal leads (and the Yellow Submarine scored four straight on the Blaugrana) in a thrilling 4-4 draw. Meanwhile, Valencia were able to knock off Real Madrid to deal Zinedine Zidane his first loss since returning to Real Madrid’s sideline. There is plenty of action no matter what you fancy on Saturday and Sunday this week.

If Barcelona are able to defeat Atletico Madrid on Saturday, that’s all she wrote when it comes to the league. That would give the Blaugrana an 11-point lead with seven matches to play, and it’s hard to see them blowing that with no matches left against the blue bloods of La Liga. An Atletico win would move them to within five points of Barca and give them a chance, but they have a much more difficult schedule the rest of the way, so they would still be behind the eight ball. The first match between these teams ended in a 1-1 draw.

A third-place finish is looking increasingly likely for Real Madrid following last week’s loss to Valencia. Madrid controlled the lion’s share of possession, but their only goal was a Karim Benzema tally three minutes into stoppage time when the outcome was already decided. It will be a season without a trophy for Real Madrid, and they are sure to be lavish spenders this offseason. They are the biggest favorite this week though, as SD Eibar are just 1-7-6 on the road.

Girona have the worst home record of any team in La Liga. If they were even an average team at home, they would be in contention for a Champions League spot, but a paltry 2-6-7 home record has them in the middle of the table. Even oddsmakers have adjusted with this line. Espanyol have the second-worst road record in the league though with a 1-6-8 mark away from home.

Rayo Vallecano are in real trouble. Even though they are currently clear of the drop, they are clear by just one point, and they are the coldest team in Spain. We haven’t seen Rayo Vallecano win a match since January, and they are facing a hot Valencia team that can move into fourth place.

April 7

  • Getafe CF PK and -0.5 vs. Athletic Bilbao, O/U 1.5 and 2
  • UD Levante -0.5 vs. SD Huesca, O/U 2.5 and 3
  • Deportivo Alaves PK and -0.5 vs. CD Leganes, O/U 2
  • Celta Vigo PK and -0.5 vs. Real Sociedad, O/U 2.5
  • Real Betis PK and -0.5 vs. Villarreal CF, O/U 2.5
  • Real Valladolid PK and +0.5 vs. Sevilla FC, O/U 2.5

The lowest total for any La Liga game this week is the tilt between Getafe and Athletic Bilbao. These are arguably the two best back lines among non-major clubs in Spain, and they have led Getafe to fourth and Bilbao to eighth in the table.

Alaves are beginning to fall back down the table as expected, and they need to find a way to score if they are going to maintain a place in Europe next season. Leganes have only allowed 34 goals this season though.

Villarreal have given us some great performances, but the Yellow Submarine are just one point clear of the relegation zone. With a -5 goal differential, it’s still hard to see them drop, but they need to keep securing results. Picking up at least a point against Betis would be huge.
