La Liga Odds Soccer Betting Season Preview

It’s hard to see anyone other than the two titans of Spanish football winning La Liga this season. Barcelona and Real Madrid have combined to win 14 of the last 15 league titles, and they dwarfed their competition in terms of spending this offseason. Real Madrid spent a whopping $350 million in order to reestablish themselves as a contender (and they might not be done spending), while Barcelona dished out $290 million. Their established talent and massive resources will make it tough for any challenger to usurp the throne these two El Clasico rivals contest each season.

Four of the last five titles have been won by Barcelona, and they have also claimed eight of the last 11 league crowns. Lionel Messi has been the unquestioned leader and talisman of the Blaugrana during this time, winning the last three Golden Boots, and his 2018-19 campaign was one for the ages.

Despite only starting in 29 games, Messi finished the season with 36 goals, 15 more than the next leading scorer in La Liga, and 13 assists (tied for the league lead). He worked most of his magic in tandem with Luis Suarez, while Ousmane Dembele became more of a factor by the end of the year.

The addition of Antoine Griezmann this offseason makes Barca even more deadly up front. Frenkie de Jong gives the club another great midfielder that can learn from Messi, but the back line might be an issue after watching Barcelona this preseason.

Real Madrid are not a club that is content to sit around and wait to get better. Following an underwhelming campaign, Los Blancos brought back Zinedine Zidane as manager and signed five players that boasted transfer fees of over $50 million.

Eden Hazard was the main acquisition. Hazard was incredible on an outgunned Chelsea squad last season and will give Real Madrid a creator that can ease Luka Modric’s burden. New forward Luka Jovic will bring some fresh legs to a forward position where the two other options are now in their 30s, and the back line should be better too with more depth than any club in the world.

Losing Griezmann to a league rival stung, but it was a loss that Atletico was prepared to take. Seeing Rodri, Lucas Hernandez, and Gelson Martins also leave the club put ownership at a crossroads, but they have reaffirmed their commitment by making the biggest signing of the summer.

Atletico spent over $140 million to acquire Joao Felix from Benfica. Felix has dazzled during the preseason, and the teenager will be asked to fill Griezmann’s old role. He and Diego Costa will be the main options in Diego Simeone’s system.

With those three clubs so entrenched at the top, everyone else is primarily hoping for Spain’s last Champions League spot. Valencia have the best chance after finishing fourth in the league last year, but their biggest move was signing Barca’s backup goalkeeper to be their starter. Goncalo Guedes and others will need to make some real progress.

The club most likely to challenge Valencia is Sevilla. Sevilla went out and signed a lot of talented players to medium-sized deals, and the hope is that a few of them hit in a big way. Julen Lopetegui is the new man in charge, and they shouldn’t have much trouble qualifying for Europe.

Those seem to be the likely top five finishers. Getafe finished fifth last year but they didn’t do much this summer, and while Villarreal are likely to be much better, they will have a hard time challenging for the Champions League.
