When the Champions League Round of 16 draw was announced two months ago, the pairing that immediately took observers’ breath away was Liverpool against Bayern Munich. Liverpool are out to win their first Premier League title in club history, and they have played great football this year. They finally have a stolid defense to complement their prolific offense, and that has led to the Reds soaring up the table. Bayern Munich have not fared so well domestically, but they are a traditional powerhouse. They have made it to at least the semifinals of the Champions League for six of the last seven years, and anything less would be a major disappointment.

Two months ago, Liverpool survived the group of death in thrilling fashion. The Reds were unable to grab any sort of result on the road against either PSG, Napoli, or Red Star Belgrade, so they needed a win against Napoli in their last game in order to advance to the knockout rounds. They did just that, but their second-place finish behind PSG meant that they would receive a tougher draw at this stage.
Bayern Munich have not been as impressive as we have seen in the past. The Bavarians could have easily finished second in their group behind Ajax, and they struggled mightily with the Dutch club’s athleticism. They were expected to run away in a relatively easy group, but instead they struggled, so they are slight underdogs to advance in this tie.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is a long-term injury for Liverpool, but he might be ready to take to the pitch in as little as six weeks. Joe Gomez is a scratch due to injury as well, as he is still recovering from foot surgery. Dejan Lovren is doubtful to play due to a thigh injury, and that hurts the club in defense, but Xherdan Shaqiri is listed as probable.
Bayern may not have Manuel Neuer once again. He is listed as doubtful due to a hand injury, and he has now missed a ton of time over the last two years. Neuer has declared that he intends to be ready by Tuesday, but we’ll see. Elsewhere, Mats Hummels and Arjen Robben are both questionable, while Renato Sanches and Corentin Tolisso are both probable.
Bayern Munich Player to Watch
For the past four years, Robert Lewandowski has been the motor for Bayern. Lewandowski has tallied 119 goals in four and a half seasons with the club, and his nose for goal is unparalleled in German football. He is one of the most adept finishers in the world today, able to fire it into the net from both his feet and his head, and Liverpool must be aware of his position on the pitch.
Liverpool Player to Watch
Mo Salah has rounded into form after a slow start to the year. Salah was a breakout star last year in the Premier League, and he looks set to win his second straight Golden Boot. He has formed a great partnership with Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, and the trio play off of each other extremely well. Salah is likely to factor in any Liverpool goal on Tuesday.

Look for Liverpool to get the job done at home here. Even though they are without some of their stars, Bayern are a club without the depth they have had in the past, and the Reds can use that to their advantage. I think they will win by one goal.
Champions League Prediction: Liverpool 2, Bayern Munich 1
