It’s been a great year for Tottenham Hotspur. Even though the club was eliminated from the FA Cup and Carabao Cup in the last few weeks, Spurs fans won’t complain. They are on pace to have their best record ever in the Premier League, and they are through to the knockout rounds of the Champions League. Now, Spurs face a good Borussia Dortmund team, but they will go into this Round of 16 tie with confidence. They beat Dortmund in both meetings in the Champions League group stage last year, winning their group in the process.

Borussia Dortmund have no complaints about their form either. Although they were stunned by Werder Bremen in the third round of the DFB Cup earlier in the week, they are seven points clear of Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga standings. They have dropped just one of their 20 league matches to date, and Dortmund finished at the top of their Champions League group too. The club was stolid in defense, securing five clean sheets in six matches to make sure Dortmund finished atop the group.
Spurs have been the kings of the last 10 minutes of regulation. They have pulled out numerous wins near the end of the match this year, and that clutch mentality is why they are poised to have their best season in decades. They secured goals in the 80th and 85th minute to grab the win and draw they needed to advance in Champions League play, and their last four Premier League goals have come at the 80th minute mark or later.
Manuel Akanji will miss the first match in this tie due to a hip injury, and both Marco Reus and Lukasz Piszczek are unlikely to play either. Reus is dealing with a thigh injury that he sustained against Bremen, while Piszczek has been hampered by a foot problem. Marwin Hitz and Roman Burki are both questionable due to illness. Not having Harry Kane and Dele Alli for either leg is going to be huge for Tottenham. Kane has been the club’s superstar for the last half-decade, and Alli has been a great complement up top. Ben Davies is probably going to miss the match with a strained groin, while Vincent Janssen is listed as doubtful. Eric Dier picked up a virus a day or so ago, but the club is optimistic he’ll be healthy for this match.
Borussia Dortmund Player to Watch
Before he leaves for Chelsea, Christian Pulisic wants to win a trophy at Dortmund. Pulisic will move to Stamford Bridge for a hefty price tag at the end of the season, but he is likely to factor here. The loss of Reus would mean Dortmund needs another player to create in the midfield, and the 20-year-old can do that. He has superb vision and a knack for knowing when to make the perfect pass.
Tottenham Hotspur Player to Watch
Lucas Moura has come up big in certain spots for Spurs this season. Moura earned a spot in the rotation with a powerful preseason performance, and he has scored some very nice goals. However, the one complaint about him is that he has been inconsistent. Moura has been a streaky player, and Spurs are hoping he will be in good form without Kane or Alli available.
