The two heavyweights in Group B of this year’s Champions League will tangle on Tuesday when Tottenham Hotspur host Bayern Munich in London. Spurs are hoping not to repeat last year’s Group Stage sweat in the Champions League, though they wouldn’t mind a repeat of their subsequent run through the knockout rounds. As for Bayern Munich, they have made it to the knockout rounds of the Champions League for 16 consecutive seasons, and they are very unlikely to miss out this year.

Through the first six weeks of the season, Tottenham Hotspur have been one of the most disappointing teams in Europe. Expectations were very high for Spurs. They were seen as the clear third-best team in England, and some pundits believed they had a chance to grab silverware in at least one competition.
However, Spurs were shocked by League Two side Colchester United in the Football League Cup earlier this week, and they are 2-2-2 in the Premier League. Tottenham have lost to lowly Newcastle United and a decent Leicester City team, leaving them in seventh place in the standings.
The Champions League hasn’t been much better for this team. Tottenham looked set to grab a win in their first match, but they blew a 2-0 lead on the road against Olympiakos and ended up having to settle for a 2-2 draw. That has them in a precarious spot here as an underdog per the soccer betting odds to Bayern Munich.
Bayern Munich have yet to drop a match in the Bundesliga, and they are heavy favorites to win their eighth straight title according to soccer futures odds. The Bavarian giants did lose the DFL Supercup to Borussia Dortmund at the start of the season, but it’s been an otherwise successful beginning to this year’s campaign.
The Bavarians are atop Group B after a 3-0 win over Red Star Belgrade in their first match. Kingsley Coman, Robert Lewandowski, and Thomas Muller all scored goals in a game where Bayern Munich dominated throughout. They finished the day with 34 shots and 11 shots on net, while controlling 73 percent of the possession.
Giovani Lo Celso is out for at least another month due to a groin injury, and Tottenham may not have another reserve midfielder available for this match. Ryan Sessegnon is currently listed as doubtful with a thigh injury.
Bayern Munich are still without midfielder Leon Goretzka, and forward Fiete Arp will miss some time after sustaining a fractured bone in his foot last week. There is good news on this front though as starting left back David Alaba is set to return to the pitch.
Tottenham Hotspur Player to Watch
Harry Kane has been called the most fortunate player in soccer, and that is starting to ring true. Kane has scored a disproportionate number of goals outside the run of play, with almost 40 percent of goals coming from dead ball situations over the last few seasons. He is fancied as a world-class striker, but he is not scoring in the open field like the best in the game.
Bayern Munich Player to Watch
Robert Lewandowski continues to be one of the most reliable forwards in the game. Lewandowski has been the Bundesliga’s top scorer in four of the last six seasons, and he already has nine goals in five matches this campaign.
Although Tottenham have not been in good form, I have faith that they will cobble together a good performance here. There is too much offensive talent aside from Kane for this team to continue to struggle.
Champions League Prediction:
Tottenham Hotspur 2, Bayern Munich 1
