England vs Scotland FIFA Womens World Cup

Scotland are looking to best longtime rival England after being humiliated by England during their first major international foray two years ago. The two countries were paired in the same group during the 2017 European Championships, and England hammered Scotland 6-0. Jodie Taylor netted a hat trick as the Three Lionesses ran roughshod over a Scottish side that was missing some of its best players due to injury. Scotland are healthy ahead of this year’s World Cup, so they are hoping to stand a better chance.

Recent Form

England are one of the favorites to win the World Cup this year despite never previously winning a major international competition. The Three Lionesses came in third place at the 2015 World Cup, and they reached the semifinals of the 2017 European Championship. They are hoping to take that final step this time around.

In the run-up to the World Cup, England have had varied results. The English looked solid with two wins over Brazil in the past eight months, and they scored a nice cup victory when they beat Japan 3-0 and drew the Americans 2-2 en route to the SheBelieves Cup. The Three Lionesses have also secured victories over Spain and Denmark, but they haven’t been at their best against former Commonwealth nations. England lost 1-0 to both Canada and New Zealand in the last two months.

This is Scotland’s first appearance at the Women’s World Cup. They had never qualified for a major tournament before making the Euros two years ago, and they have built off their experience in the Netherlands. Scotland lost just one match during qualifying for this year’s event, and there is reason to be optimistic about their chances of making the knockout rounds.

The Scottish were able to nip Brazil 1-0 two months ago, and they bested Jamaica 3-2 last week in their final tune-up before France. They also proved they can keep it close with the powerhouses, falling to the United States and Canada 1-0.

England Player to Watch

Nikita Parris is a star in the making. She led Manchester City to two FA Cups and scored 62 goals with the club over the last two seasons. That success led to the best team in the world (Olympique Lyon) acquiring her last month, and she is ready to prove herself on the biggest stage in the world. Parris has netted 12 goals during her international career.

Scotland Player to Watch

Erin Cuthbert is just 20 years old, and she is the future of Scottish soccer. She is three years younger than anyone else on the Scottish national team, but she is already the most talented player on the roster. Cuthbert has scored 10 times in 30 appearances with her country, and she was named one of the best players in England this last year.

England vs. Scotland Free Picks

This will be a higher scoring match than the experts believe. Scotland have weapons they didn’t have the last time around in Kim Little and Lizzie Arnot. They have other talented forwards like Jane Ross and Lisa Evans, and they can create opportunities.

Of course, the Three Lionesses have playmakers of their own. Karen Carney has done it all in her career, both Carney and Jill Scott are well-versed at making things happen from the midfield. Frank Kirby and Ellen White add an attacking punch, and I see at least three goals here.

England vs. Scotland Prediction: England 3, Scotland 1
