Womens World Cup England vs United States

The two best teams left in the Women’s World Cup will meet in the first semifinal on Tuesday outside of Lyon. The United States and England were both expected to be here. The USWNT has made it to at least the semifinals in all eight World Cups, while England were one of the favorites before the start of the tournament. Whichever team wins will be the favorite to win the World Cup over either the Netherlands or Sweden on Sunday, as the best team left from the top half of the bracket.

Recent Form

As the defending champions, the USWNT were the favorites coming into France. After a dominant performance in the Group Stage, they only saw those odds become more pronounced. The United States outscored Thailand, Chile, and Sweden by a combined margin of 18-0, but the knockout rounds saw the Americans have to answer some tests.

In the Round of 16, the USWNT had a very tough time with Spain. Spain’s midfield played a ball possession game that kept the Americans from building momentum, and that flustered the US attack. Megan Rapinoe fired home two penalties to give the US a 2-1 win over Spain, but it wasn’t easy.

Nor was the match against hosts France in the Quarterfinals on Friday. This was seen as a de facto ‘final’ by many, and Rapinoe was again the difference maker. She notched both of the goals for the United States once more, and the US held on from there to earn a spot in the semis with a 2-1 win over France. The Group Stage wasn’t much of a test for England either. The Three Lionesses won all three of their matches, beating Japan 2-0 in the last match off of an Ellen White brace to secure first place in the group.

England have looked the most convincing of any team in the knockout rounds. They crushed Cameroon 3-0 despite the game devolving into more of a spectacle than a soccer match in the Round of 16, and they beat Norway 3-0 as well in the Quarterfinals with their most complete performance yet. The Three Lionesses didn’t let Norway’s star midfielder get into a rhythm, while their attack constantly swarmed and created chances. The win gave England their fourth straight clean sheet in this competition.

England Player to Watch

Ellen White has been fantastic for England at the World Cup. White is tied with three other players in the race for the Golden Boot with five goals, and she has scored in four different matches. She has been fabulous in France, and her ability to link up with other major components of England’s offense has made this attack a treat to watch.

United States Player to Watch

If you notch a brace in back-to-back games, you certainly are going to get the most attention coming into your next match. Rapinoe has been sensational at the World Cup. She is not known as a goal scorer, but a little bit of luck and some clinical finishing have led to her becoming the go-to player for the USWNT. With Alex Morgan seemingly hurt, Rapinoe has taken on a bigger role and flourished.

The over in this match is a great bet. Although England has given up just one goal and the US has allowed only two goals, neither one of these back lines has been invulnerable. Both have made their share of mistakes, while both of these teams are filled with world-class midfielders and forwards. Take the over and throw some coin on the US too.

England vs. United States Prediction: United States 3, England 2
