FIFA Womens World Cup France vs Nigeria

Coming into the Women’s World Cup, France were one of the teams to beat. Unlike some of the other favorites that have been largely or partly unimpressive, the French have been up to the task at hand, and they will have a chance to finish first in Group A with a result against Nigeria on Monday.

However, winning Group A might not be the best thing. The winner of that group will likely walk into the quarterfinals, but they will face the Group F winner at that point, and that’s likely to be the United States. Meanwhile, the runner-up in Group A will face the runner-up in Group C in the Round of 16 and will likely face the winner of Group D in the quarterfinals.

Recent Form

Nigeria have a chance to advance to the knockout rounds of the World Cup for just the second time in their history. They were seen as the also-ran ahead of this competition, but the Super Falcons bounced back in a big way after a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Norway in their opener.

The Super Falcons were underdogs to South Korea, but they counterattacked well and ended up earning a 2-0 win. Nigeria’s first goal was an own goal, and they locked up the win when Asisat Oshoala dribbled around and through Korea’s defense and goalkeeper before slotting it into the net.

France had no trouble against Korea in their opener. In the first game of this competition, Eugenie Le Sommer opened the scoring just nine minutes into the match, and center back Wendie Renard pushed forward to net two goals just before halftime. Amandine Henry got in on the action late in a 4-0 win.

Getting three points against Norway was much more difficult. There were no goals scored in the first half, but Valerie Gauvin put France ahead 1-0 just after halftime. Norway leveled the score after a Renard own goal before Le Sommer put France ahead once more with a penalty conversion. France held on from there to earn a 2-1 win.

France Player to Watch

Le Sommer is looking to lead France to their first ever World Cup title. She is one of a number of stars for Olympique Lyon on this squad, and she has a chance to pass Marinette Pinchon to become the country’s all-time leading scorer at this tournament. Le Sommer has scored 76 times in 161 matches, and she’ll have some good opportunities to score in this match.

Nigeria Player to Watch

Oshoala will probably end up as the best player in Nigeria’s history. She was the best player and leading scorer at the 2014 U-20 Women’s World Cup, and she netted seven times in six matches to lead the Super Falcons to a runner-up finish at that tournament. Her goal against Korea underlined her potential, and she shined after a transfer to Barcelona earlier this year. Oshoala scored eight times in eight matches for the Blaugrana.

I’m interested to see what the lineup will look like for France. They may want to give some of their stars a bit of a rest, as they have the depth to use some of their reserves and still get a result against Nigeria. I believe this will be closer than the oddsmakers think with Nigeria presenting some problems in the back with their young legs.

France vs. Nigeria Prediction: France 2, Nigeria 1
