You can make a strong case that Belgium has been the most impressive team so far in the 2018 World Cup. They routed Panama by a score of 3-0 and dismantled Tunisia 5-2 before a 1-0 win against England in a match in which they rested their top players. Belgium has two very capable scorers in Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard and an exciting midfielder in Kevin De Bruyne and they should be able to outclass Japan in this matchup. Belgium has had high hopes in the knockout stage of the World Cup in the past and disappointed.

Japan has been a surprise in the World Cup, as they were not expected to get out of the group stage. They have had their moments, going 1-1-1, but they were also very fortunate, as they won a tiebreaker with Senegal just to finish in second place in Group H. Japan and Senegal were tied in terms of points and goal differential and the tiebreaker came down to “fair play”. It is a weird tiebreaker where the team with the fewest yellow and red cards wins the tiebreaker. Japan had two fewer yellow cards than Senegal.

Key Stats

Belgium is unbeaten in their last five matches, with four of the five going over the total. Japan is 2-2-1 in their last five matches, with three of the five going over the total.

Japan and Belgium met in a friendly last year and it was Belgium winning by a score of 1-0. The teams also met in a friendly in 2013 and it was Japan winning by a score of 3-2.

Belgium vs. Japan Free Picks

It is hard to make any kind of a case for taking Japan in this contest. They were lucky just to get out of the group stage and they simply don’t have enough talent across the board to beat a team like Belgium unless they get a miraculous performance from someone. The price on Belgium is high, but they have far more scoring options than Japan. You can make a case that Japan may only have one of two players who could even start for Belgium. The only concern in this match is Belgium’s lack of success in the knockout round. They have continually disappointed in big games throughout the years. The good news for Belgium is that they get perhaps the best possible opponent in the Round of 16, as Japan is the worst of the remaining 16 teams. I will lay the price and take Belgium in this matchup. I also think the total could have some value in this game. Belgium simply has too many scoring options to be held down and once they score it will force Japan to open up their game and that should mean more scoring chances for both sides. I will also play the game to go over the total.
