We're getting set to start World Cup qualifying once again here in the month of March, but over in Africa, there isn't anything else to play for again until August when the teams reconvene. The CAF has been involved in the African Cup of Nations of late, a tournament won by Cameroon. That said, there's still plenty left to decide for the five nations who will ultimately make it to the World Cup in 2018.

Group A

DR Congo – 6 Points

Tunisia – 6 Points

Guinea – 0 Points

Libya – 0 Points

Group A might be the most interesting group in the fold at this point. Sure, we're still just two matches into the six that are going to be played, but DR Congo and Tunisia are the only ones left standing with a real shot of qualifying. The real matches of concern will both come in the end of August and beginning of September, as this is where these two will work out their differences. The slight advantage goes to DR Congo at this point because it took care of Libya and Guinea in the first two matches of play by a combined five goals, while Tunisia did the job by just three.

Group B

Nigeria – 6 Points

Cameroon – 2 Points

Zambia – 1 Point

Algeria – 1 Point

Nigeria is a stalwart in the World Cup, and this probably isn't going to be an exception in 2018. The Super Eagles have six points in their first two matches in Group B, though it should be noted that they still have these two matches against Cameroon to go. You'd like to think that Cameroon is going to need at least four points in those two matches to keep Group B interesting. Otherwise, we might have one of our first World Cup teams to qualify outside of the automatic qualifier that is the host, Russia.

Group C

Ivory Coast – 4 Points

Morocco – 2 Points

Gabon – 2 Points

Mali – 1 Point

There's still a lot to play for in Group C due to the fact that two of the first four matches in this group ended in draws. In fact, there have only been four goals scored so far in the four duels, and they were all scored in the Ivory Coast/Mali match, a 3-1 victory for Les Elephants. Ivory Coast feels like the best of these four teams, but Morocco had a respectable run in AFCON into the quarterfinals and could be a threat as we go forward. One thing is for sure, and that's that qualifying in Group C is probably going to come down to the wire.

Group D

Burkina Faso – 4 Points

South Africa – 4 Points

Senegal – 3 Points

Cape Verde – 0 Points

Cape Verde was always going to be the doormat in Group D, and that should make the rest of these matches between Burkina Faso, South Africa and Senegal really interesting. Of these four, Burkina Faso had the best run in AFCON, and that might ultimately be a good sign for it. The Stallions have four points to show for their work in two fixtures thus far, and they have never played in the World Cup in the past. This could be their lucky year.

Group E

Egypt – 6 Points

Uganda – 4 Points

Ghana – 1 Point

Congo – 0 Points

Ghana has been a big disappointment thus far in the last stage of World Cup qualifying, as it has just one point to show for its work and very likely needs the maximum 12 the rest of the way to have a real shot at winning this group. Egypt feels like the best of the four teams though, and its 4-1 mark in wins over Ghana and Congo in the opening stage was a big step in the right direction. Uganda has four points as well, including a big one at Ghana in the last round of qualifying, but it has a lot of work to do from here, including two matches against Egypt that probably won't end up going well.
