So far the high expectations for France have been met even though some of it has resembled a high wire act, which is also not surprising. Many punters see France as a team on the come. They boast an embarrassment of riches when it comes to pure talent and ability. But their youth can sometimes offset that.
Manager Didier Deschamps has had to fight the inconsistency and erratic mistakes that come with a talented young roster. Uruguay entered the World Cup as a team that was grudgingly respected but also highly ignored. La Celeste doesn’t hold the name brand cache for the betting public that France does. France meets Uruguay on Friday with the winner moving on to the semifinal. The loser will go home.

France Wins Group C
France’s opening game was a portent of things to come. It was a Russian Roulette type of victory over Australia 2-1. In fact, it took an Aussie own goal by Aziz Behich to hand the match to France. In their second match Les Bleus met a uniquely styled Peru team and escaped with a 1-0 win. Peru is a difficult out and the win showed that France has character. In their third and final mate of Group C the French played Denmark to a scoreless draw. Les Bleus won Group C basically by default. But win it they did.
Group A Taken by Uruguay
Uruguay faced Egypt in their opener and was fortunate to find that the Pharaohs were without their best player. Mo Salah was out which forced Egypt into a defensive shell. It took a header Jose Gimenez at the 89 minute mark to get the win. In their second match Uruguay faced similar defensive tactics by outgunned Saudi Arabia. Once again, La Celeste got the 1-0 win. In their highly anticipated match against Russia for the Group A championship Uruguay exploded for a 3-0 victory.
Name Brand Knockouts!
Both Uruguay and France faced marquee teams in their Round of 16 matches that featured the two greatest players in the world.
France took on Lionel Messi and Argentina in one of the most thrilling matches so far. Les Bleus scored a 4-3 win as Kylian Mbappe scored two goals. Messi was kept off the scoreboard.
Uruguay posted an equally impressive 2-1 win over Portugal and their famed star Ronaldo. Edinson Cavani had both goals for La Celeste.
One of the reasons that France and Uruguay have made it his far is due to excellent management.
For Uruguay Oscar Tabarez has proven to be perhaps the best defensive mind in the game. Proof of that comes in the fact that Uruguay has permitted just one goal against in their four World Cup matches so far. Tabarez is a superior motivator and leader that has long ago gotten a full buy in from his team. Nobody plays a harder or more intense defense than La Celeste. In fact, it’s a dominant force of nature.
For France Didier Deschamps has firmly established himself as the longest serving coach in team history. Deschamps has overseen the vast roster makeover and youth movement over the past few years. He as done well to school a talented but inexperienced group.
