The Belmont Stakes is an American grade I stakes Thoroughbred horse race, that is known as, "The Test of the Champion", contested at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York and also, nicknamee the “Run for the Carnations” because the winning horse is draped in a garland of white carnations. The winning owner is presented with the silver August Belmont trophy, which is crafted by Tiffany and Co.
As well, the Belmont Staked is the oldest of the three prestigious Triple Crown races. On top of that, it’s the fourth oldest race in the history of North America. It follows five weeks after the Kentucky Derby, and three weeks after the Preakness Stakes, and then the Belmont Stakes, as the final leg of the U.S. Triple Crown.
What makes the Belmont unique compared to the other two jewels is its length. It’s 1 ½ miles compared to 1 3/16-mile Preakness and the 1 ¼-mile Kentucky Derby.
It is a 1.5 miles (2.4 km) horse race, open to three-year-old Thoroughbreds. Colts and geldings carry a weight of 126 pounds (57 kg); fillies carry 121 pounds (55 kg).
