The Kentucky Derby is the first of three races that make up the Triple Crown of horse racing, together with the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. This race, held in Churchill Downs in Kentucky, has come to be known as the "most exciting two minutes in sports", as it usually takes about that long.

The Kentucky Derby runs each year on the first Saturday of the month of May. Also Dubbed “The Run of the Roses” the Kentucky Derby winners are greeted with a blanked of roses hence the name. The race has also been called “The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports” because of the time it takes to run. Horses taking place in the Derby are 3-year old Thoroughbreds and many are looking to secure the elusive Triple Crown. The other Triple Crown races include the Preakness Stakes on May 19 and the Belmont Stakes in June.

The 2018 Kentucky Derby takes place on Saturday on NBC, with Justify listed as the 3-1 morning line favorite. The Bob Baffert trained horse has a good post position at No. 7 and a Hall of Fame jockey in Mike Smith. What the horse must overcome is history, as no horse has won the Kentucky Derby without having raced as a 2-year old since Apollo in 1882. The third horse on the morning line, Magnum Moon, is also trying to break that hex. Let’s look at Saturday’s race and Kentucky Derby picks.

Top Five Contenders

There are five horses listed at single-digit odds to win Saturday’s Kentucky Derby. Justify is the clear top choice at odds of 3-1 and the horse has done nothing to say he can’t win and break the Apollo curse. The second choice on the morning line at odds of 5-1 is Mendelssohn and he has even more history to overcome, as no shipper has ever won this race. We mentioned Magnum Moon earlier, and he is listed at odds of 6-1. The other two horses listed at single-digit odds are Audible who has an outstanding Post Position at No. 5 and Bolt d’Oro who finished second behind Justify in the Santa Anita Derby. Post Position No. 5 has won the Kentucky Derby a total of 10 times, the most in history.

Do you remember when it was simply a given that you didn’t bet the Kentucky Derby favorite? The Derby favorite was the kiss of death, as the favorite lost on a regular basis from 1980 to 2000. Things have changed in recent years, as the favorite has been cashing on a regular basis. The Kentucky Derby favorite has won in each of the last five years.

Longshots to Consider

If you are going to bet a longshot you should be aware of what we just mentioned, and that is the recent favorite bias. There really don’t appear to be a lot of live longshots in this year’s race. Good Magic could have been a horse to consider, but he has not looked right in the last few weeks and he hasn’t had many good workouts leading up to the Derby. The only longshot worth consideration could be Vino Rosso. The horse has Curlin as his sire, is trained by Todd Pletcher and he likes to come off the pace. He has some appeal at odds of 12-1. Perhaps My Boy Jack could get a dream run and get into the mix. He does have Kent Desormeaux riding him and he is not without a chance.

Kentucky Derby Picks

I know that history is made to be broken but I am not bucking the Apollo curse and I am not taking the shipper. That leaves Audible or Bolt d’Oro as the two horses to consider. I lean a little bit to Bolt d’Oro, as he has considered the Derby favorite until losing to Justify in the Santa Anita Derby. I think he can bounce back and win on Saturday. I also like Vino Rosso as a live longshot.

It’s not always the favorite that wins the race and any number of circumstances can drastically affect the outcome. Rain or excessively dry weather can determine how a horse and the jockey fare during the race. Since the surface of the track is dirt even the dust or mud will play a role in how the horses run. In 1913 a horse by the name of Donerail with odds of 91.45 won the Kentucky Derby, a record he still holds.

The jockeys will also play a huge role in the outcome of any given race. A horse that does not agree with his rider will not perform well under the stress of a high profile race. Some jockeys are so good at their jobs that they are sought out by owners and trainers. Whenever a jockey with a winning record is paired with a horse of the same caliber the formula will often lead to victory.

Top 3 Jockeys with the Most Kentucky Derby Wins:

Jockey Kentucky Derby Wins Years Won
Eddie Arcaro 5 1938, 1941, 1945, 1948, 1952
Bill Hartack 5 1957, 1960, 1962, 1964, 1969
Bill Shoemaker 4 1955, 1959, 1965, 1986

The Kentucky Derby was inaugurated in 1875 and takes place con the Churchill Downs Race Course in Louisville, Kentucky. The list of qualifiers for the 144th running of the 2018 Kentucky Derby features nothing but the top 3-year old thoroughbreds around.
