Ohio State -13.5 vs Michigan State

The Spartans had more success against Urban Meyer’s Buckeyes than any other team in the Big Ten, and Mark Dantonio will be out to keep that trend going with Ryan Day now on the sidelines. Dantonio is a master at winning low-scoring, ugly games. Whereas most coaches are around a coinflip in single-score games, Dantonio has shined in them throughout his career to the point that it’s definitely not just a statistical anomaly.

Running the ball against Michigan State is going to be a tall order for Ohio State. They’ve only had real success doing it once in the past four seasons, and if they can’t have some success running the ball, they could be in trouble. While Day and Meyer are different coaches, both are ardent believers in play action and that was the key to Dwayne Haskins’ success in 2018.

West Virginia +5 vs Texas

There’s going to be plenty of chirping before this one. West Virginia went into Texas and walked out with the win last season, and the Mountaineers made sure to let everyone in Austin know about it. The Mountaineers were given unsportsmanlike conduct penalties twice for showing the ‘Horns Down’ hand symbol to opposing fans and players, and Tom Herman and Texas were not happy afterwards. That led to plenty of talk about whether or not the ‘Horns Down’ symbol would be banned by the Big 12 this offseason, and it was a hot topic at media days.

This is going to be chippy. West Virginia has one of the best home field advantages in the sport, but there’s a new coach (Neal Brown), and major questions at the quarterback position. That won’t stop Texas from celebrating when they get into the end zone though, and you can be sure that Tom Herman will make his feelings known after what we’ve seen from him in past situations like this one.

Florida -7 vs Auburn

This game kicks off the toughest stretch on Florida’s schedule. The Gators have a very good chance of entering this week 5-0, but their next three games are on the road against LSU and South Carolina and against Georgia in Jacksonville.

Dan Mullen had a fair amount of success against Gus Malzahn while he was at Mississippi State, and he has a promising young quarterback in Feleipe Franks. Franks is the dual-threat option that Mullen prefers and had major success with during his time in Starkville.

At this point, Malzahn and Auburn are hoping that one of three freshmen will have emerged to take the reins. There are no experienced quarterbacks on the roster, so it’s likely that Malzahn plays at least two freshmen while figuring out his best option going forward.

Michigan -12 vs Iowa

The Hawkeyes always beat one team they have no business beating. Last year, they knocked off Penn State in Happy Valley in surprising fashion, and the year before that, Iowa stunned Ohio State 55-24 in a beatdown for the ages.

If that trend continues, Michigan is on upset alert this week. Iowa essentially has three weeks to prepare with a bye in Week 4 and a home game against Middle Tennessee State in Week 5, while the Wolverines have two conference games before this one.
