Division: NFC West
City: Glendale, Arizona
Stadium: State Farm Stadium
First Season: 1898
Head Coach: Kliff Kingsbury
The Cardinals were the worst team in the NFL in 2018, and drastic changes resulted. Steve Wilks was fired after only one season as coach and replaced by Kliff Kingsbury, who was fired himself from Texas Tech. Kingsbury always got his offenses to perform well in college but had trouble stopping opponents. The Cardinals are hoping he focuses on offense and that former Broncos coach Vance Joseph can limit opponents as the defensive coordinator. The Cardinals traded last year’s first-round pick, quarterback Josh Rosen, after only one season and took Kyler Murray with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. The Kingsbury hire and Murray selection were bold, and the team is hoping it results in more success in 2019.
Super Bowl Odds: +12973
Odds To WIn The NFC West: +2300
Regular Season Win Total: 5
The Cardinals went 3-13 a year ago, so even if there is improvement this season it will be tough for the team to compete for the playoffs. The more important thing is the first look at Murray, who won the Heisman Trophy a season ago at Oklahoma and has a dazzling combination of arm talent and mobility. If he can affect games the way he did in college, the Cardinals’ rebuild will be pushed into over-drive. Running back David Johnson is hoping to bounce back after a frustrating 2018, while the receiving corps will be led by Larry Fitzgerald and Christian Kirk. The offensive line was shaky and injury-prone a year ago, and if that doesn’t improve, Murray could be under regular duress, which won’t be good for his development.
The defense took a step back last year, but much of that was because it was on the field a lot as the offense struggled badly. The group has talent, as edge rusher Chandler Jones is a perennial double-digit sack performer, while safeties Budda Baker and D.J. Swearinger are a nice duo. Linebackers Terrell Suggs and Jordan Hicks were added in free agency to boost the talent level. Star cornerback Patrick Peterson may be the team’s best player, but he will miss the first six games of the season due to a suspension for performance-enhancing drugs, which is a big blow.
The Cardinals are going to be fun to watch in 2019, as Kingsbury is expected to use spread offensive principles that have become commonplace in the college game. The team is going to play faster than is usually seen in the NFL and defenses have to be ready for it. If he succeeds, it could signal a change in the NFL as a whole. Kingsbury and Murray have gotten a lot of attention this offseason and if they live up to the hype, the Cardinals may be able to hit the “over” on their conservative win total.
