The Washington Redskins weren’t a true Super Bowl contender in 2018, but they were having a decent season. However, a catastrophic injury to quarterback Alex Smith ended the team’s shot at the playoffs and he may never play again. Washington took a couple of stabs at fixing its quarterback situation, trading for veteran Case Keenum in the offseason and then drafting Dwayne Haskins in the first round. Colt McCoy remains on the team, and this is one of the cloudiest quarterback situations in the NFL heading into 2019. Washington does not seem to have a very high ceiling because it’s almost guaranteed to have a below average quarterback leading the way this season.

Washington went 7-9 a year ago and there is a decent amount of talent on the team. However, without an elite passing game, it is hard to imagine the Redskins can truly compete for a playoff berth in 2019. McCoy or Keenum seems likely to begin the season as the starter, as they both have a large amount of NFL experience. It would not be a surprise to see Haskins take over at some point in the season. If he shows some flashes then the Redskins fanbase will certainly be excited about the future. However, Haskins seems unlikely to play well enough as a rookie to boost the Washington offense.
The Redskins could try to run the ball often in 2019. They have Adrian Peterson in the fold, while Derrius Guice is getting back to health after missing his rookie season due to a torn ACL. The receiving corps has some serious question marks, and some of the young wideouts on the roster really need to step up. Trent Williams is one of the best left tackles in the game but he is staying away from the team in training camp and has expressed a desire to be traded. It will be a huge blow if Williams doesn’t play this year.
Ryan Kerrigan and first-round draft pick Montez Sweat are hoping to get regular pressure on opposing quarterbacks this season, and if that happens, it will be a boost to the defense. The Redskins claimed the troubled Reuben Foster off waivers from the 49ers last season but the linebacker tore his ACL and will miss the season. Washington will be led in the secondary by star cornerback Josh Norman and offseason addition Landon Collins, one of the premier safeties in the NFL.
The Washington defense will need to do the heavy lifting in 2019 as the quarterback situation is murky at best and the offense could struggle to move the ball consistently.
