Justify already has a unique distinction in that the colt became the first horse since 1882 to win the Kentucky Derby without ever running as a two-year-old. Justify first caught everyone’s attention with a win in the prestigious Grade I Santa Anita Derby on April 7, 2018. After the win at Santa Anita, Justify became of the favorites to win the Blanket of Roses. In the slop of the rainy Kentucky Derby Justify broke well from the start for a fast opening quarter and trailed only Promises Fulfilled. By the time the horses hit the stretch Justify held off Bolt d’Oro and Good Magic. Justify took the stretch with a lead of one and a half lengths and widened it to two and a half lengths at the finish.
Bob Baffert is the trainer of Justify and is celebrated is one of the greatest of all time. Baffert has posted five Kentucky Derby wins with six career wins at the Preakness Stakes. He was the trainer of 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharaoh. The only horse since 1978 to win the Triple Crown.
Jockey Mike Smith is also one of the most accomplished in the world. The 52-year-old Smith has two Kentucky Derby wins and a win at the Preakness in his career.
Why Justify Will Win the Preakness Stakes
Justify has every bit of ability to win the Preakness Stakes and head off to the Belmont Stakes with a shot at Triple Crown Glory. The record indicates that this is a dominant horse that can excel against the best competition possible.
Why Justify Won't Win the Preakness Stakes
Justify will be going up against a lot of fresh horses at the Preakness Stakes. Horses that skipped the Kentucky Derby for whatever reason and will not have the strain of that past pressure. The days of Triple Crown winners are quite rare with just one since 1978. Parity is paramount this year and it’s going to be a huge ask to get Justify through the Preakness against well rested competition.
The Final Verdict
Justify looks like a generational horse. This is a colt that has handled everything thrown at it so far. Expect Justify to win the Preakness Stakes!
