Panama will make their first-ever World Cup appearance at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Panama finished third in CONCACAF and they will become the 13th different team from CONCACAF to play in the World Cup. Panama is given no chance to win the 2018 World Cup at odds of +40000 and it is very unlikely they will even get out of the group stage. Just making the World Cup is already a huge success story for Panama.

Panama 2018 World Cup Odds: +40000

Panama is a huge longshot to win the 2018 World Cup at odds of +40000. Panama wasn’t even supposed to make the World Cup and they have no real chance to win the title. The question is whether or not they can be competitive in the group stage.

Panama finished third in CONCACAF to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. Panama defeated Costa Rica in their final match and got help from Trinidad & Tobago, who eliminated the United States. Panama was not expected to be good enough to compete for a World Cup spot, but the team played hard and never quit fighting. Panama went 3-3 in qualifying, with four draws, and they were actually outscored by a combined 10-9. Panama did just enough to qualify, as they picked up a huge away win at Honduras and they got four draws.

“It's a really significant achievement and something we deserve. We’ve been striving for this for a good while now and it all worked out. We’ve been working very well together and, despite what happened in the USA, we never lost faith or gave up.” Roman Torres said on

Players to Watch

Panama does have a quality goalkeeper in Jaime Penedo who has more than 100 caps for his country. He will need to play great just to give Panama a chance to pick up a point or two at the 2018 World Cup.  Panama has no real scoring so they rely on defenders like Felipe Baloy and Gabriel Gomez to limit opponent’s chances.  Panama doesn’t have much scoring power but players to watch upfront include Gabriel Torres, Blas Perez and Luis Tejada.

The Coach

Hernan Dario Gomez took over in 2014. His nickname is El Bolillo and he has previous World Cup coaching experience, as he led Ecuador in 2002.

Panama World Cup History

Panama will be making their World Cup debut in 2018. They have attempted World Cup qualification since 1978 but have always fallen short. They got close in 2014 but lost at home to the United States but they qualified for the 2018 World Cup, due in large part to the United States losing to Trinidad & Tobago.

Panama 2018 World Cup Predictions

Panama is not going to win the 2018 World Cup and it is very unlikely they will get out of the group stage. The question is whether or not they will even get a point in the group stage, and based on their roster and their qualifying results, it seems unlikely.
