The teams currently leading the NBA are the Houston Rockets and the defending champion Golden State Warriors. The Toronto Raptors and Boston Celtics are not far behind the league leaders as we enter the second half of the NBA season. The Rockets are on fire in the past weeks having won 14 of the last 15 games and they are currently surfing the waves of a 10 game win streak. In the Eastern Conference the odds to win favor the Cleveland Cavaliers whereas in the Western Conference the Golden State Warriors are still the team to beat.
In order to paint a clearer picture, the Eastern Conference has seen the Toronto Raptors making their way to the front of the line. They have 9 wins in 10 games as they slid past the Celtics who previously owned the top spot. There’s still some wiggle room in ranks in the East so it’ll be interesting to see how the Raptors fair in the weeks to come.
In the Western Conference the Houston Rockets are neck and neck with the Golden State Warriors. They have run off and left the rest of the Conference no less than 10 games back. The Warriors record last year ended with them only taking 15 losses the entire season. As they stand now their record is 45-14 with plenty of games left on the schedule.
There are always players that take center stage as the NBA season plays out. We trust that players like LeBron James and Stephen Curry won’t let us down and they usually come through. Surprisingly, neither James nor Curry holds leading positions in any of the top categories. The Rockets James Harden owns scoring with a dominating average of 31.3 ppg, the Pistons Andres Drummond enters the second half of the season averaging 15.7 rebounds. The Thunders Russell Westbrook with 25.3 points, 10.4 assists and 9.5 rebounds is on the path to completing another full season with a triple-double average.
It wouldn’t be fair not to point out that the Utah Jazz, although no threat to the conference leaders, are on an 11 game win streak. The victims left roasted in the path of the Jazz win streak include the Raptors and Warriors in back to back games. A few nights after sneaking past the Raptors by just 4 points they demolished the Warriors with a 30 point difference.
