Defense of the Ancients 2 Betting OddseSports Betting OddsDOTA 2 was one of the first multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games, and it was a hit upon its release. The game immediately had the support of its publisher, Valve, which offered one million dollars to the team that won the first-ever edition of The International back in 2011. It was one of the first eSports to ever offer a million dollars as a grand prize as a tournament, and that solidified it as a major eSport. Since then, the competitive scene for DOTA 2 has grown by leaps and bounds with The International being the most lucrative competition in eSports by a wide margin.

DOTA 2 - The Game

Dota 2 followed in the footsteps of its predecessor Defense of the Ancients (DotA). Both games are played with teams of five players that battle it out on a large map with the objective of destroying the other team’s Ancient. The Ancients are located at the far corners of the map and teams fight each other, fight for objectives, and take down enemy structures on the way to the base.

The game is seen as one of the most difficult ones to master of all the eSports. There are currently 115 champions that can be played in a match, and most professional players have to be skilled on at least two dozen in order to be successful.

Heroes are split into two primary roles, carries and supports. Carries are the damage dealers that get stronger as the game goes on, with the ability to inflict large amounts of damage onto an opponent. Supports are heroes that are able to help out the carries throughout the game, helping them get the buffs and the items they need in order to lead the team to victory.

Characters start out the game at level one and gain experience to level up all the way to level 25. Along the way they level up their four abilities, allowing them to get stronger as the game goes on. There is no time limit in this game, so matches can last for over an hour as teams vie to destroy the other’s base.

Dota 2 - The eSport

The original Dota was a community-created mod for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. The mod came out in 2003 and was a big hit upon its release. There were a number of events that held competitions for the game, giving the game a grassroots movement on its way to becoming a full-fledged eSport.

Dota was such a hit that Valve purchased the rights for the mod in order to make a stand-alone game. Development started in 2009, and Valve immediately tried to push the competitive aspect of it. The first edition of The International took place before the game was released to the public, with Valve releasing it early to 16 teams that would take part in the inaugural event.

The International was a major success, and it quickly became one of the most popular eSports. The next two versions of the event had relatively the same amount of prize money awarded, but Valve changed the game with The International 2014. That year’s tournament offered fans the opportunity to increase the size of the prize pool by buying in-game items, with Valve donating 25 percent of the revenue to the overall prize pool at the event. The idea took off and each of the four subsequent versions of The International has smashed the previous record for most lucrative eSports event.

The last two editions of The International each had overall prize pools of over $20 million, and that has led to enormous competition and fierce interest. This year’s event will also have a prize pool of at least $20 million, but for the first time ever, it might not surprise the prize pool from the previous season.
