League of Legends - The Game

When it was released in 2009, League of Legends turned the video game world on its head. Rather than charge a price for the game, it was released for free with the goal of getting users to purchase champions, skins, and other things in the game. The freemium model has been a tremendous success. By removing the barrier of the initial price, millions of people around the world downloaded and tried the game, leading to it picking up a global audience.

League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game that was inspired by Dota. In the same vein as Dota, two teams of five players vie to destroy the other one’s Nexus in order to win the game. The two Nexuses are located on opposite ends of the map and teams battle each other, neutral objectives, and enemy objectives across the map in order to try to gain advantages that will help them win the game.

Right now, there are 140 champions in League of Legends. There is a pick and ban phase where each team selects five champions and bans away five other champions to settle on a team. The meta has changed numerous times over the years, but generally each team will play with a top laner, a jungler, a mid laner, an AD Carry, and a support. The roles usually complement one another in order to help teams win late game teamfights.

Each player starts the game at level one and progresses all the way up to level 18 as they gather experience. They get stronger and level up abilities along the way, purchasing items in order to help their team defeat the opposition.

League of Legends - The eSport

No eSport has a larger viewership than League of Legends. The game’s global reach has helped it tremendously at international competitions and developer Riot Games has taken the time to try to establish domestic leagues in regions around the world. While some regions are much stronger than others, having teams and players from so many places, gets people everywhere to tune in.

Currently, there are five major domestic leagues for League of Legends. The LCK (Korea) and LPL (China) are seen as the two best leagues by a wide margin, but teams from the NA LCS (North America), EU LCS (Europe), and LMS (Taiwan) are always in the mix at international events.

Since 2015, there have been two major international events per year, the Mid-Season Invitational and the World Championship. Both events have been dominated by teams from Korea historically, although Chinese teams have had the upper hand recently. The global nature of the game has led to both events taking places in different locales across the world, helping grow the brand.

Each domestic league has two splits during the year. The first split typically takes place from January to April in order for the winners to meet at the Mid-Season Invitational, while the second split takes place from June to September with the World Championship kicking off shortly after the conclusion of all the domestic seasons. At least one team from every region will take part in both tournaments, giving every team around the world a chance for glory.
