Preakness Stakes Odds - Among the unique handicapping factors for the Preakness Stakes that sets it apart from the Kentucky Derby is that there will be plenty of capable horses making the run at Pimlico that did not take part in the Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs. Quip is such a horse. Quip was held out of the Kentucky Derby with the focus being on getting fully prepared and well rested for the Preakness Stakes. As a result, this colt could be one of the top threats to Kentucky Derby winner Justify, who went through the obvious stress of preparing for and winning the blanket of roses.
The Preakness Stakes will go to post on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 6:20 p.m. ET at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. Catch the Preakness States live on NBC.

Quip is a three-year-old colt that is owned by WinStar Farm LLC with trainer Rodolphe Brisset and jockey Florent Geroux. Quip is by Distorted Humor and Princess Ash.
Quip’s last race took place on April 14, 2018 in the Grade One Arkansas Derby. Magnum Moon won the race with Quip finishing second and Solomini third. Prior to the run at the Arkansas Derby Quip was victorious in the Grade Two Tampa Bay Derby on March 10, 2018 with Flameaway second and World of Trouble finishing third. Perhaps the one blemish on Quip’s record occurred on November 25, 2017 at the Kentucky Jockey Club Grade Two race at Churchill Downs. Quip finished out of the money at seventh place with Enticed getting the win, Tiz Mischief finishing second and Promises Fulfilled coming in third. Quip won the first two races of his career with a six-furlong run at Churchill Downs on September 23, 2017 followed by a mile and a sixteenth win at Keeneland in an allowance race on October 19, 2017.
Why Quip Will Win the Preakness Stakes
Quip will be well rested and have the advantage of not having gone through the stress of the Kentucky Derby. Trainers will tell you how much the Derby takes out of not just the horse but the jockey and training staff as well. It is a drain. Beyond that Quip has shown ability at the Grade One level with his run at the Arkansas Derby.
Why Quip Won't Win the Preakness Stakes
Quip was held out of the Kentucky Derby for the likely reason that owners and Brisset felt he couldn’t deliver the win. Talk of rest is nice but no horse is going to skip the Derby if they have a legitimate shot at winning it. Justify was phenomenal in the slop and mud to get the big Derby win.
The Final Verdict
With a limited field expected for the Preakness Quip should finish in the money but is not at the level of Justify.
