Preakness Stakes Odds - Bolt d’Oro was in the top tier of choices to win the Kentucky Derby but finished a highly disappointing 12th place. What was most disturbing was that Bolt d’Oro climbed as high as third place in the Run for the Roses at the one-mile mark before completely and totally petering out at the end. Wilting down the stretch in the biggest race of the year does not impress horse players. But for bargain hunters it could be one of the best things that ever happened. Bolt d’Oro is now a discredited beaten favorite. That means he is a horse with ability and a possibly enhanced price.

Bolt d’Oro is a three year old Bay Colt by Medaglia d’Oro and Globe Trot with trainer Mick Ruis and jockey Victor Espinoza. The owner is Ruis Racing LLC with the Breeder WinStar Farm LLC. Bolt d’Oro entered the Kentucky Derby as one of the favored contenders with plenty of good reason. He had built up a credible resume of success and profits.
On April 7, 2018 Bolt d’Oro ran in the Grade One Santa Anita Derby at Santa Anita and finished second behind eventual Kentucky Derby winner Justify with Core Beliefs taking third. The race time was 1:49.72 for a race that was one and one eighth miles in length. Justify led wire to wire and Bolt d’Oro was in second position for the entire race. This result is what led credence to Bolt d’Oro being a top tier contender for the Derby. And for sharps it is a result that will stay on their minds for the Preakness Stakes.
Prior to the Santa Anita Derby on March 10, 2018 Bolt d’Oro finished second in the Grade Two San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita with McKinzie finishing first and Kanthaka taking third place. The race was one and one sixteenth miles in length and has a final time of 1:42.71. It was a highly competitive and physical race with plenty of bumping that eventually cost McKinzie a reversal of the win which was given to Bolt d’Oro instead.
Also on Bolt d’Oro’s resume is a third place finish in the Breeders Cup Juvenile and wins in the Grade One Front Runner Stakes and Del Mar Futurity.
Why Bolt d’Oro Will Win the Preakness Stakes
Bolt d’Oro has shown the ability to run with the very best and should bring enhanced value after the bad Kentucky Derby run.
Why Bolt d’Oro Won't Win the Preakness Stakes
Bolt d’Oro has not produced wins this year at the same rate he did as a two year old.
The Final Verdict
Bolt d’Oro may bring the most value of any horse in the Preakness Field.
