One of the biggest longshots to win the 2018 World Cup in Russia is Egypt at odds of +40000. Egypt will be ending a 28-year World Cup drought as they make their third World Cup appearance, as they lost in the first round in 1934 and in 1990. Egypt will face long odds just to make it out of the group stage but at least they have a great story in goal in 44-year old Essam El Hadary and a marquee scorer in Mohamed Salah who plays for Liverpool. Egypt may not be the automatic out that the odds suggest.

Egypt 2018 World Cup Odds: +40000

Egypt is a huge longshot to win the 2018 World Cup and realistically they have no real chance to win the title. They simply don’t have the depth to compete with most of the top teams but at least Egypt has a quality goalkeeper and a few other marquee players in Salah, Mohamed El Neny and Mohammed Abdul Shafi.

Players to Watch

Mohamed Salah scored five goals in qualifying, as Egypt finally was able to make the World Cup after missing out for the last 28 years. If Salah can score, and Essam El Hadary plays well in goal, then Egypt can be competitive. They have Mohammed Abdul Shafi on the left flank and Arsenal Mohamed El Neny in the midfield. The key player of course is Salah who plays at Liverpool. He scored in all of the Pharaoh’s third round wins.

El Hadary is expected to become the oldest player to ever play in a World Cup match at the age of 44. “I did almost everything in my footballing career. I won 37 trophies and I enjoyed some remarkable moments such as our win over Italy at the 2009 Confederations Cup. The only thing that is missing for me is a World Cup appearance,” El Hadary said to

The Coach

Hector Cuper took over in March of 2015. He has done an excellent job with Egypt, as he led them back to the African Cup of Nations where they made it all the way to the final before losing to Cameroon. Cuper has previously coached at Valencia and Inter Milan.

Egypt World Cup History

Egypt has had no previous World Cup success, as they are making just their third overall appearance. They made it in Italy in 1934 and they qualified for the 1990 World Cup in Italy. Egypt has played just four previous World Cup matches and scored only three goals.

Egypt 2018 World Cup Predictions

Egypt will face a tough task just getting out of the group stage but at least it is not hopeless, as they have a quality goalkeeper and a good striker. If Egypt can get a good draw they might be able to surprise a few teams at the 2018 World Cup.
