History will be made at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, as Iceland will make their debut. Iceland will become the smallest country by population to ever play in the World Cup. It has been an amazing ride for Iceland, as they were last in their group in qualifying in 2010 but they made the playoffs in qualifying for Brazil before losing to Croatia. Iceland advanced to the quarterfinals at EURO 2016 and Iceland topped a tough Group I to make it to Russia in 2018.

Iceland 2018 World Cup Odds: +20000

Iceland is understandably a big longshot to win the 2018 World Cup, as they are listed at odds of +20000. Iceland will face a difficult task just getting out of the group stage but they did surprise at EURO 2016, so they are not without a chance to make an impact in Russia.

2018 World Cup Qualifying Results

Iceland won Group I in qualifying, as they went 7-2 with 1 draw. They outscored opponents by a combined 16-7. Iceland finished ahead of Croatia, Ukraine, Finland and Turkey to win the group. Coach Heimir Hallgrimsson said that he is proud of his team. "The hardest thing was to get going again after France,” said Hallgrimsson on FIFA.com. "And what's more we were in a group contested between Croatia, Turkey, Ukraine and Finland, who are much better than their position in the group would have you believe. The success is not an end in itself but a long journey towards a final destination."

Players to Watch

Iceland is not without talent, as they have two marquee players in Gylfi Sigurdsson and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson.

The Coach

Lars Lagerback had been the manager since 2011. He led Iceland to success at EURO 2016 but Heimir Hallgrimsson, who was joint-coach with Lagerback, will take over at the 2018 World Cup.

Iceland World Cup History

Iceland will be making their World Cup debut in Russia in 2018. The team just missed out on making it in Brazil in 2014. Midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson, who plays for Everton, said that his team’s qualification is not a fluke. "I think over the last four or five years we’ve been playing in really big games," said Sigurdsson on FIFA.com. "With the play-offs for the World Cup in Brazil, the games leading up to the EURO, then the EURO itself and now as well, it seems like all the games we’ve been playing lately have been important for us. That’s how you want it to be. I think we’ve been improving as well in those big games because five or six years ago we couldn’t really handle them. But now the team is much more prepared for them and we’re a better team as well."

Iceland 2018 World Cup Predictions

Iceland is without question a great story heading into the 2018 World Cup, but they don’t have enough scoring to make a deep run. Depending upon the draw they might have a chance to steal a point or two but getting out of the group stage seems unlikely.
