Mexico has become a World Cup regular, as they will be making their 16th appearance at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. It will be the seventh straight appearance for Mexico at the World Cup. The team has never made it past the quarterfinals and Mexico has gone out in the round of 16 in the last six World Cups. Mexico is considered a longshot to win the 2018 World Cup at odds of +5000.

Mexico 2018 World Cup Odds: +5000

Mexico could be undervalued at odds of +5000. The team looked good in qualification, as they rolled through CONCACAF and Mexico now has a coach in Carlos Osorio who understands that his team has to play defense to win.

2018 World Cup Qualifying Results

Mexico looked really good on the road, winning 2-1 at the United States in qualifying. Mexico went 6-3-1 in qualifying, outscoring opponents by a combined 16-7. Osorio has been criticized in the press for his rotations and strategy but Mexico did well in qualifying and Osorio has to be given some credit. Captain Andres Guardardo said that his coach knows what he is doing. "It's very clear that many don't like Osorio's style, but we have been effective, we've known how to play World Cup qualifying, maybe not playing really well, but facing these types of rivals is very difficult." Guardardo said.

Winger Jurgen Damm said the players have bought in. "Of course (we like Osorio's methods)," said Damm, “You see it in how the teams plays. We all have the possibility of playing and it is a great plus that he trusts all his players. We are with him until the end."

Players to Watch

Mexico nearly beat the Netherlands four years ago to make the quarterfinals and they have virtually the same team for 2018. Javier Hernandez and Andres Guardado are two of the players to watch. Hernandez, known by his nickname Chicharito, plays for West Ham United in the Premier League, while Guardardo plays for Real Betis in La Liga.

The Coach

Juan Carlos Osorio took over from Miguel Herrera and Ricardo Ferretti. Osorio spent time as an assistant at Manchester City and he was the coach with the Chicago Fire and the New York Red Bulls. He coached in Colombia in 2009 and had success with Atletico Nacional.

Mexico World Cup History

Mexico will be making their 16th World Cup appearance. They played in the first World Cup in Uruguay in 1930. Their best efforts came in 1970 and 1986 at home, as they reached the quarterfinals. Only four teams have played in more World Cups than Mexico, as Brazil has 20 appearances, Italy has 18 and Argentina has 16. Mexico has played 53 World Cup matches in their history and they have scored 57 goals for an average of 1.1 goals per match.

Mexico 2018 World Cup Predictions

Mexico is a very interesting team for the 2018 World Cup. They are experienced, well coached and they have some talented players. Normally Mexico is thought of as a team that can’t play defense but they seem to have a new outlook under Osorio. Mexico has been a reliable team to make it out of the group stage in recent World Cups and perhaps 2018 is the year they get to the quarterfinals or beyond.
