One of the longshots to win the 2018 World Cup is Nigeria, as they are listed with odds of +12500. Nigeria may not be getting enough respect, as they made it out of the group stage four years ago in Brazil. Manager Gernot Rohr has said that just making it out of the group stage is not enough for Nigeria, as he has set a goal of making the semifinals in Russia. No African side has ever made the semifinals in a World Cup, so Nigeria has their work cut out for them at the 2018 World Cup.

Nigeria 2018 World Cup Odds: +12500

Nigeria is definitely undervalued in terms of 2018 World Cup odds, as they are definitely better than a number of teams with lower odds. Nigeria has the best goalkeeper in Africa in Vincent Enyeama and they have other players like John Obi Mikel, Sunday Mba, Joel Obi and Efe Ambrose who have shown they can play at a high level.

Players to Watch

Nigeria has a quality goalkeeper in Enyeama and they have some capable players who can make an impact in Mikel, Mba, Obi and Ambrose.

The Coach

Nigeria is led by German coach Gernot Rohr who took over in August of 2016. He has coached at Gabon, Niger and Burkina Faso. Rohr said that getting past the Round of 16 is the goal for Nigeria in Russia. He said to L’Equipe that expectations are high. “We will try to do as well. Unfortunately, here, the ambitions are a little more excessive: the team must reach at least the semifinals. We have the ambition of the leaders to manage, even if I get along very well with the president (Amaju Pinnick), who came to get me.”

Nigeria World Cup History

Nigeria has made five previous World Cup appearances. They have played 18 World Cup matches and scored 20 goals, for an average of 1.1 goals per game.

Nigeria 2018 World Cup Predictions

Nigeria is an interesting team heading into the 2018 World Cup. Rarely does a team listed at +12500 have a coach say that their goal is to make it to the semifinals. Nigeria has proven in the past they are capable of getting out of the group stage, so they will not be afraid of any team in Russia. The question is how far can they go?  Nigeria still doesn’t have the talent to compete with the top teams like Germany, Brazil and Spain but if the draw is favorable, it is not out of the question to see this team reach the quarterfinals and make a run at a semifinal spot.
