FC Barcelona vs. Liverpool FC

There are two heavyweights left in the Champions League at this point, and they will meet in one of the two semifinals clashes. FC Barcelona are slight favorites to advance over Liverpool FC, but they need a win at home in the first leg of their tie to feel good about their chances. Barcelona are looking to make it six straight seasons that a Spanish team has been crowned champions, while Liverpool are looking to break their tie with Barca and Bayern Munich at five Champions League titles.

Recent Form

Liverpool knew they were going to be drawn into a tough group, but they didn’t expect to be drawn into the group of death. The Reds had to survive a group that included Paris Saint-Germain and Napoli, and they finished second despite losing all three of their road tilts. From there, they received another tough draw and needed to pick up a result on the road against Bayern Munich in the Round of 16 to advance. The randomness finally went in their favor in the quarterfinals, as they had no trouble getting past Porto.

It’s been a relative cakewalk for Barcelona to get to this point. The Blaugrana didn’t drop a match despite being paired in a group with Tottenham and Inter Milan, and they barely broke a sweat against Lyon in the Round of 16. They were heavy favorites against Manchester United in the quarterfinals, and they proved they were in another class by beating United 4-0 on aggregate.

Key Absences

There’s great news for Liverpool on the injury front, as all of their starting eleven could be healthy for Wednesday. Fabinho is the only player that occasionally starts that is a doubt, but the other two players on their injury list are reserve players. Adam Lallana is questionable, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is a long-term injury.

Barcelona have even better news on the injury front. Rafinha was lost for the season with an MCL tear late last year, but he is the only player that is banged up for Barca.

FC Barcelona Player to Watch

You have to highlight Lionel Messi here. Messi’s numbers are just absurd this season. He is running away with the Golden Boot in La Liga with 33 goals in 31 matches (12 more than the next closer player), and he is tied for the league lead with 13 assists. Messi has been even better in the Champions League with 10 goals and three assists in eight matches. He makes everyone on Barcelona better, and he is the hardest player in the world to contain.

Liverpool FC Player to Watch

The Reds have a magic man of their own in Mo Salah. Salah had a banner season in earning the Premier League Golden Boot and leading Liverpool to the Champions League Final last season. He is looking to get back to the final and win it this time after a questionable play from Sergio Ramos led to Salah separating his shoulder and being lost for the year. Salah has looked a bit fatigued at times after a short offseason, but he needs to be on point here.

Champions League Free Picks

Barcelona are the best team left in the Champions League, and I think they will prove it in the first leg of this tie. They have more talent than Liverpool across the board, and that will shine through.

Champions League Prediction: FC Barcelona 2, Liverpool FC 0
