UEFA Champions League Today - Soccer odds

There weren’t many upsets in the Group Stage of this year’s UEFA Champions League, but the knockout stage draw pitted some of the favorites to win this competition against each other. Liverpool will have to face one of the best defensive teams in the world in Atletico Madrid, Manchester City and Real Madrid will square off in a battle of juggernauts, and Bayern Munich must take on a dangerous Chelsea squad that has surprised at this stage in previous years.

There is sure to be plenty of excitement next week when the knockout round gets underway, so let’s look at the Champions League betting odds.

Although Liverpool faces a tough test by taking on Atletico Madrid, the Reds are the favorites to win the Champions League. They have been the best team in Europe by any standard thus far this season, and they are the defending champions after running the gauntlet to win the title last season.

Soccer Sports Betting

This year’s version of Liverpool is even better than last year’s edition. The Reds didn’t make any big moves in the offseason after winning last year’s Champions League, but they have benefitted from extra time together. Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane are one of the most dangerous attacking trios in club soccer, and the midfield is solid. The backline boasts the best center back in the world in Virgil van Dijk, and Alisson has been superb in net. It will take something special to beat this squad, and it’s hard to pick against Liverpool since they are unbeaten in league play.

It’s been a disappointing season for Manchester City. A long-awaited Champions League triumph would smooth over a lot of hard feelings among ownership and fans though. The back-to-back Premier League champions have already lost six times in domestic play this season, but this was a team built for European success. They are absolutely lethal on the attack, and that makes them dangerous against any powerhouse on the continent.

However, there is little value in City at the current betting odds. The club romped through its Champions League group, but the Citizens’ toughest competition was upstart Atalanta, and there are major problems in the backline. Those issues could bite this club when it matters most against the most decorated team in European history.

Atletico Madrid vs Liverpool

Liverpool are on a historic run over the last year and change. The Reds have not lost a Premier League match since January 3, and they have turned England’s top league into a laugher this season. They are 22 points ahead of Manchester City in the race for the league title, and their 24-1-0 record has the Reds on pace to be the best team in the history of England. With that kind of dominance, it’s no wonder that Liverpool is the favorite to win the Champions League, but the Reds have a tough test in the Round of 16 in Atletico Madrid.

Recent Form

Atletico Madrid is in a dog fight in La Liga. They are currently tied with Sevilla for third place, as they just haven’t been able to create goals without Antoine Griezmann. Joao Felix, Alvaro Morata, and Diego Costa don’t have the same chemistry that made Diego Simeone’s team a contender, and Atletico is averaging a single goal per game.

This is still one of the best defensive teams in Europe though. The backline is rock solid, and Jan Oblak is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. His play helped Atletico allow just five goals in the Champions League Group Stage, but Liverpool will test him.

As previously mentioned, Liverpool is in rarified air. The reigning Champions League title holders have been unstoppable this season, and their improvement in the back has made this club incredibly difficult to beat. They have only conceded 15 goals in 25 league games, but they allowed eight goals in the Champions League Group Stage.

Notable Absences

Atletico has been incredibly unlucky on the injury front this campaign. Their three main forwards may all miss this match, and that would make it difficult to pick up a result against Liverpool. Dario Poveda is out for the season, while Kieran Trippier is out for another two months. Thomas Lemar, Joao Felix, Alvaro Morata, Koke, and Hector Herrera are all questionable to play, but the club is somewhat optimistic about the prospects of Diego Costa, Jose Maria Gimenez, and Santiago Arias.

Nathaniel Clyne and Yasser Larouci are both going to miss this match for Liverpool. James Milner and Xherdan Shaqiri are questionable, while Sadio Mane is probable to play.

Liverpool Players to Watch

Alisson has been superb for Liverpool this season. Either Alisson or Oblak is the top goalkeeper in the world, and Alisson has made a strong case that he has surpassed Atletico’s star. His advanced statistics are fabulous, showing that he is the top goalkeeper in England, and he has allowed just one goal in his last 10 matches in Premier League play.

Atletico Madrid Players to Watch

Angel Correa is having the best season of his young career. The Argentinian forward has been with Atletico Madrid since 2014, and no one expected him to be the most productive player on the roster. However, he has stepped up as his teammates have gone down due to injury, and he is the second-leading scorer on Atletico and leads the team in assists.

Champions League Free Picks

Both these teams are world-class in the back, so don’t expect to see much offense. The under is a good play, and I like Liverpool to pick up the win given Atletico’s injury concerns.

The situation at Camp Nou makes Barcelona a non-play too. There is dissension in the ranks as Lionel Messi has lashed out at the club’s board after Ernesto Valverde was dumped in mid-January, and the Blaugrana have made a habit of disappointing in the Champions League in recent years. Barcelona have already lost four games in domestic action this season, so this club wasn’t as good as believed in the preseason, but Barca shouldn’t have much of a problem against a Napoli squad that has cratered.

There is value in Real Madrid given the club’s storied history in this competition. Real Madrid doesn’t have the superstars of seasons past, but they do have a seasoned manager in Zinedine Zidane, and he has revitalized this club after an unacceptable performance during the 2018-19 campaign. Red Bull Leipzig could have some value too as this is a young squad that has a favorable matchup against underwhelming Tottenham Hotspur in the Round of 16. Leipzig has a budding superstar in Timo Werner, and he could lead this club to some surprising results.
